SOL KAPLAN, 94, of Sarasota, Fla., died
June 10, 2014.
Born in New York City, he served in
the U. S. Army during World War II. He
spent his working life in Detroit, creating
and operating Kaplan's Wholesale Foods.
Among his business peers, his custom-
ers and his employees, he was known as
dependable, reliable and generous.
In his long retirement, Mr. Kaplan, an
expert bridge player, enjoyed the status
of life master. He continued to maintain
his avid interest in politics with a fervent
commitment to the liberal view.
Mr. Kaplan is survived by and will
be missed by his beloved daughter,
Carole Hafner, and son-in-law, Frank
Bell of Wayland, Mass.; son-in-law,
Daniel Walsh of Ann Arbor; brother-
in-law, Channing Lipson, and sister-in-
law, Laura Lipson of West Bloomfield;
daughter-in-law, Sarah Kaplan, and her
husband, Leon Steinberg of Minnetonka,
Minn.; grandchildren, Spencer Walsh,
Rachael Walsh, Simon Kaplan and Lucy
Kaplan.

Mr. Kaplan was the loving husband for
63 years of the late Muriel Kaplan; father
of the late Robert Kaplan and Lenore
Kaplan Walsh.
Interment was at the National
Cemetery in Sarasota, Fla.

SOPHIA LOUISE KUREK, beloved

daughter, sister and friend, passed away
from accidental causes on June 8, 2014.
She was born Feb. 27, 1991, to Michael
and Lisa (Moore) Kurek. Sophie was an
incredibly kind soul, who impacted every
life she touched.
She graduated from Greenhills School
in Ann Arbor in 2009 and went on to
Goucher College, where she followed
her two true passions, dance and medi-
cine. Sophie graduated from Goucher
College in 2013 with a degree in ballet
performance while also completing her
pre-med requirements. She graduated
summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa
and was the recipient of numerous aca-
demic honors and scholarships. She truly
excelled in both the classroom and on
the stage. Sophie realized her dream of
becoming a professional ballerina by
joining the Ballet Theater of Maryland
in Annapolis, following her graduation
from Goucher.
In the months preceding her death,
Sophie studied diligently for the MCAT
exam so that she could succeed in her
goal of becoming a doctor. She will be
remembered by her family and friends
as a beautiful, loving and overwhelm-
ingly talented soul who always put others
before herself.
She will forever be loved and remem-
bered by her parents, Michael and Lisa,
formerly of Ann Arbor, of Austin, Texas;
her brother, Max; her grandparents,
Morris and Edna Moore, formerly of
West Bloomfield, of Austin; other family
and friends who loved her so much.
