Cancer Thrivers' Women
Promote Healthy Spirit
While riding our bikes on a warm, sunny
day, with the wind in our faces and
responding to neighbors' cheerful greetings,
we can't help but think how lucky we are to
be thrivers!
We have not just survived cancer; we have
realized that life is beautiful and its beauty
should be acknowledged and shared. This
is the essence of the Jewish Community
Center's Cancer Thrivers Network for Jewish
Women. Our mission to enrich and empow-
er Jewish women through activities, friend-
ship, resources, education and humor has
guided us since 2008, and our organization
now includes 285 thrivers. We believe that a
healthy spirit and positive attitude contribute
to a healthy body.
To help us carry out our mission, we
are hosting a fundraising luncheon Friday,
July 18, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the JCC in
West Bloomfield. The event, "Lech Lecha:
Go Forth with Life, Friendship and Hope
will feature guest speaker Allen S. Lichter,
CEO of the American Society of Clinical
Oncology, who will discuss "The Future of
Oncology: New Developments in Cancer
Diagnosis & Treatment"
In memory of the Thrivers' beloved
co-founder Patti Nemer, and in honor of
thrivers everywhere, we will unveil a mural
designed by Gail Rosenbloom Kaplan. The

F. Kevin Browett

mural, also called "Lech Lecha," will perma-
nently hang in the lobby of the JCC in West
Bloomfield and inspire and give hope to
generations of thrivers to come.
The co-chairs of the Lech Lecha event
are Michelle Passon and Sandy Schwartz.
Cancer Thrivers chair is Miriam Cohen,
and vice chair is Rita Sitron.
The event is sponsored by the Barbara
Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute; the Jewish
Women's Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit; the Charles Gershenson Trust,
Maurice Binkow, Trustee; and many individ-
ual patrons and friends. To become a patron
or purchase tickets, starting at $36, contact
Sandy Schwartz at (248) 851-6146 or
sandyrschwartz@gmail.com , or Michelle
Passon at (248) 895-2664 or smp1543@

Memorial Day Event At Meer

This past Memorial Day, World War II and
Korean War veterans who are residents of
Meer Apartments in West Bloomfield told
of some of their war experiences before an
overflowing crowd. Even some war widows
opened their hearts.
This event proved so successful that
Meer has it scheduled as an annual event.

S

ummer is upon us, which can
mean only one thing for many
young people in the local com-
munity: summer camp. Some of the
most popular summer camps in Metro
Detroit are those run by the Fresh Air
Society under the name of Tamarack
Camps.
The Fresh Air Society began in
1902, with the Tamarack name and an
expanded campsite arriving around 50
years later. The Tamarack campsite,
which was purchased near Ortonville

was first announced in 1950. It opened
two years later, as can be seen in this

The advertisement announces the
building of a series of villages on the
