Hillel fellowship leads to greater
appreciation of the Jewish state.

o people my age take
Israel for granted?
This question has been
swirling around in my
mind since the final session of the
2014 Hillel of Metro
Detroit Israel Fellowship.
After 10 weeks of news
articles, class discussion
and various speakers
(not to mention lots
of Jerusalem Pizza),
our final guest speaker
raised this question at
the end of his visit. And
it got me thinking.
For me personally, the
answer used to be "yes."
I did take Israel for
granted. I was aware of
the conflicts in the Middle East, but
not their depth. I was aware of the
struggles undertaken to make Israel
a state, but not their consequences.
For me, Israel's existence was
simply a fact of life, and my lack
of knowledge surrounding its
history, its politics and its place
in the world today kept me from
considering that one day it could
be destroyed by an enemy — or a
lack of allies.
But in today's world of boycotts,
sanctions and nuclear weapons, it
is important, now more than ever,
to have an understanding of Israel's
history and the conflict in the
Middle East. At a time when Israel
is so often negatively portrayed in
the media, it is imperative that we
understand what we are fighting
for and why.
In 2010, I participated in the
Taglit Birthright trip to Israel.
But four years later, I still knew
very little about Israel, and my
connection to the Jewish homeland
just wasn't there. I was ignorant
of much of Israel's story; I was still
taking its existence for granted.
So when I heard about the
Israel Fellowship, I leapt at the
opportunity to learn about the
past, present and future of this tiny
country.
I applied and was accepted,

and the next thing I knew, on
Monday nights I was sitting at
the Oak Park JCC with 10 other
eager, inquisitive minds as we
discussed Israel's history, struggles
and place in the modern
world. We looked at
the good, the bad and
the ugly, challenging
our perceptions
and expanding our
knowledge. The following
is some of what I've
taken away from this
incredible experience.

What Israel Is Not

Israel is not perfect. Like
many countries, it has
gone through dark and
arduous times to get where it is
now, but the overall goal and the
overall gain — a Jewish, demo-
cratic state, which has given back
so much — is important not just
for Jews but also for citizens of
Israel and the entire world.
Israel is not infallible. It is
surrounded by a myriad of threats:
of countries that want to attack
it and terrorist organizations that
want to drive it into the sea. While
this is dangerous, any waiver of
support for Israel from its allies is
even more dangerous. We must not
allow Israel to fall — it stands for
too much.
Israel is not an apartheid state.
An apartheid state is one in which
a particular race of people have
absolutely no rights or privileges
whatsoever. Citizens of Israel not
only come from all races, countries
and creeds, but also they are all
equally protected under the law.
All Israelis, no matter the color of
their skin or the heritage of their
ancestors, have equal rights and
opportunities. Does this sound like
apartheid to you?
