Brett Kramer

Contributing Writer
T
he ending was forgettable,
but it was a great season
nonetheless for Brett Kramer,
Harrison Milen and the North
Farmington High School baseball
team.
The state-ranked Raiders finished
25-8 overall and 11-4 in the Oakland
Activities Association White Division,
winning their second straight division
championship.
And they played a game at Comerica
Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.
Kramer and Milen both pitched an
inning in North Farmington's 7-3 non-
league win May 1 over Bullock Creek
at Comerica. At the plate, Kramer had
a triple and he scored a run. Milen
went 2-for-2 with a double and he
knocked in two runs.
"It was a dream come true to play
there Kramer said. "But once you're
on the field, it's just like a normal field.
You're comfortable
Milen described the experience as
amazing, especially because he pitched
off the same mound as some of his
favorite pitchers like the Tigers' Justin
Verlander.
North Farmington and Bullock
Creek played nine innings instead
of the usual seven to give everyone a
chance to get in the game.
Unfortunately, North Farmington's
season came to an abrupt end May
31 when the Raiders lost 3-2 in 10
innings to Novi in the championship
game of the Michigan High School
Athletic Association Division 1 district
tournament at Farmington.
The Raiders beat Novi Catholic
Central 8-3 in the district semifinals to
get a shot at the district title, but they
lost to Novi on a two-out, walk-off
single.
Kramer and Milen, both juniors,
were important pieces of the North
Farmington roster.
In addition to being the team's start-
ing second baseman for the second
straight season, Kramer was a reliable
pitcher.
He finished with a 3-3 record and
one save, but the right-hander didn't
get the victory in six games he pitched
in relief that the Raiders won.
"My job in those games was to shut
the door on the other team and give
my team a chance to win,” he said.
He also kept his team alive in the
district championship game loss to
Novi when he wiggled out of a bases-
loaded jam in the bottom of the sev-
enth with a strikeout.
Kramer's ERA was an impressive
1.86. He pitched 30 innings.
His glove also was crucial to North
Farmington's success. He made just
four errors in 33 games for a .969
fielding percentage. He had 62 chances
and he participated in a dozen double
plays.
Kramer batted just .213, but his
defense and bunting ability made up
for a lack of production at the plate.
He said he'll probably move from
second base to shortstop next season,
which is fine with him.
This actually was Kramer's third
year as a varsity starter. He transferred
to North Farmington from nearby
Harrison High after starting at short-
stop for Harrison when he was a fresh-
man.
A big reason for the transfer was
to play with longtime friends includ-
ing Milen, who pitched and played
occasionally at third base and in the
outfield this season.
The right-hander was 4-1 on the
mound and he hit .324 with a .447
on-base percentage and six RBIs in his
first varsity season.
"I anticipate Harrison will start
in the outfield for us next year,"
said North Farmington coach Mike
O'Connell.
Milen was happy with his perfor-
mance this season.
"I did better than I expected," he
said. "We had a lot of seniors [seven]
who got a lot of playing time, of
course, and I feel I made the most of
my opportunities to help the team:'
Kramer said a major reason for
North Farmington's success was team
chemistry.
"We're all friends, so we played loose
and we had fun," he said.
Kramer and Milen are playing sum-
mer travel baseball with the Oakland
Whitecaps and Michigan Red Sox,
respectively.
