Selecting A Senior Living Residence

ransitioning into a Senior Living Community requires a great deal of preparation to ensure the safety, enjoyment and lifelong
satisfaction of starting a new chapter in life. After visiting more than two dozen senior facilities, I have assembled a checklist
of the criteria that will make this highly crucial search simple and manageable.
The process begins with the elimination of those facilities that do not meet the necessary criteria. You might find this practical
checklist useful and instructive for finding your Senior Living community:

FIRST IMPRESSION:
Look around and ask yourself these simple questions:
• Does this community exude joy, energy and liveliness or is it neglected, gloomy and depressing?
• Is the waiting area decorated tastefully with care or does it appear dull, drab and dreary?
• Do the staff seem happy to be here? Are they friendly, well-groomed, loving and compassionate?
• Do you smell fresh flowers and plants or are the plants fake emitting plastic pollutants instead of healthy oxygen?

LOCATION:
Similar to looking for a house, eliminate any senior facility that is hindered by one of the following:
• Situated on a busy highway or a noisy street with cars continuously zooming by making noise and emitting pollutants.
• Located next to a noisy school, shopping center or playground.
• Placed in a downtown with all the usual city noise: shouting pedestrians, bars, shops, crying kids, veering motorcycles and Police
sirens.
• Situated too far away from a pleasant downtown, restaurants and shops.
• Located in an unsafe neighborhood.

VIEW:
You would not buy a house overlooking the parking lot, a shopping center or a school. Then why live in a senior facility that does?
Does your residence look over a lake, a river, or a park? Great! If not, cross it off, for soon it will become boring and depressing.

FURNISHINGS:
Does the facility furniture look new? Are the chairs and sofas comfortable to sit and get up? Or are they for show only? Are the
chairs and tables sturdy and stable? Because nothing is worse than cheap furniture that falls apart after a few uses.

ADMINISTRATION:
Who are the President, the CEO, the CFO, and the COO of the company? Do any of them have an office on site? If you have a
question, can you go directly to the President, CEO, CFO or COO? Or is the corporation a faceless entity, only referred to as "The
Corporation"?

FEELING SPECIAL:
Will living in this senior facility make you feel special? Not just when the weather is nice and you can walk outside or swim and
play tennis, but in those cold gray and snowy months of Michigan winter? So ask: Does it have an indoor pool? Enclosed walkway?
Multiple buildings to avoid cabin fever? Shops, restaurants and gathering places? Can you still enjoy the view of nature when the
snow has piled up outside?

SAFETY:
• Does the senior residence make you feel as safe and secure as you feel in your own home?
• Is the facility staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is there someone seated at the reception desk at all times, day and night? Is
the onsite medical staff CPR trained?

HAPPY TO VISIT:
Is the facility so interesting and attractive that your loved ones, friends and family voluntarily come to visit you? Or will it be a
chore and an obligation for them to come to the facility?

COMPARE & MAKE A DECISION:
After you have eliminated the facilities that do not meet the above criteria, you are ready to compare amenities, residence sizes
and offerings.
