orothy Newman, 100, of
Ann Arbor, died June 6,
2014.
Known as "Bubbie," Mrs. Newman
was a sweet gentle soul who always
put the needs of others before her
own. She was born to immigrant par-
ents in Chicago on Dec. 18, 1913. Her
childhood was spent in Southwestern
Michigan, where her mother ran a
summer boarding house to support
the family. Dorothy
began helping her
mother cook at age 11
and continued cooking
well into her 80s for
the Jewish Community
Center's older adults.
As the eldest child,
she returned to Chicago
to earn money to help
support her family,
including helping her
brothers and sister attend college.
Dorothy spent a brief time in Florida,
where she met her husband, Louis,
and then moved to Wayne, Mich., to
work in the war plants; she lived there
until she moved to Ann Arbor in 1989.
With hard work and determina-
tion, she and her husband, Lou,
made a good life for themselves
and their children. Dorothy spoke
Yiddish until learning English in kin-
dergarten, allowing her to interpret
for her family. She loved school and
graduated at the top of her class; she
often substituted for her teachers in
her small rural schools. In her mid-
30s, Dorothy finally could afford to
begin college. She went on to receive
bachelor's and master's degrees from
Eastern Michigan University and
taught first grade for 26 years in the
Wayne/Westland School District. She
retired at the age of 72 but contin-
ued to run her late husband's scrap
business. Her life was dedicated to
