Since traveling to Thailand in January and meeting with KWO and other women's rights organizations working on the Thai-Burma border, I felt compelled to do something to stand up for the rights of all women to live free of violence and fear. During the Policy Summit, I kept that commitment by meeting with staff from nine U.S. Senate and House of Representatives offices to push for the passage of IVAWA and share my experiences in Thailand. One out of every three women across the world will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, according to Promise of Equality, a 2005 population study from the United Nations Population Fund. My cohort of Global Justice Fellows, made up of Jewish graduate rabbinic students, has been given an opportunity to strengthen our own identities as Jews and as U.S. citizens by supporting human rights. Advocating for IVAWA is the first step in our long campaign. Traveling to the Thai-Burma border forced me to reflect on my own sense of place and time. It was not long ago that Jewish people were persecuted minorities in foreign lands. As we sat in a circle on the other side of the globe that day in Thailand, the dedicated Karen women asked us how Jews have survived; how we did what the Karen are trying to do now. As we discussed the commonalities in our histories, it became clear to me that our survival has given us a mandate to help others do the same. In advocating for a bill like IVAWA, we support the rights of women and girls around the world who — like my new friends in Thailand — deserve to live lives free from oppression and fear. ❑ Bobby Siporin of Huntington Woods grew up as a member of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township.
