Vv ■ FARMERS* MARKET Verve Pipe will play a special family concert June 22 at the Berman. The KAT's Meow • JCC to present its first concert for children with special needs. Elizabeth Applebaum Special to the Jewish News F or children with special needs, the complexities of language can be daunting. And yet there is a single word that may make everything more clear, if only briefly. "Music:' said composer and conduc- tor Leonard Bernstein, "can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable!' On Sunday, June 22, the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit will present a concert that will be a first: The entire event — music, lighting, sound level, accommodations, a place to get away if it becomes too much — all will be designed especially for children with special needs. The event, Concert for KAT (Kids All Together), celebrates the 20th anniversary of the JCC's Department of Special Needs, which provides inclu- sion programs for children to attend the JCC's Pitt Child Development Center, summer camps and more, plus numerous social activities for teens and adults. The program will feature the East Lansing sensation, the Verve Pipe, who also will be marking the release of their new family-friendly CD "Overboard!' "The idea for the concert was the result of speaking with parents, learn- ing what type of event they thought would be most meaningful for them!' said Nichole Shotwell, director of the JCC's Department of Special Needs. "Many really wanted something they can do with their children, something for the entire family. "The Verve Pipe, whose music appeals to people of all ages, seemed like a natural fit," she added. "For children with disabilities to be able to attend, we knew we needed to make this a sensory-friendly event, so we partnered with our friends at Kaufman Children's Center [in West Blomfield], who will be providing a sensory break room for the kids' concert!' The event will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts, 6600 W. Maple Road, West Bloomfield, and will include a post-concert meet-and-greet with the band. The Verve Pipe actually began their career in the world of rock music. Their song "The Freshmen!' which group founder Brian Vander Ark wrote while staying on Gull Lake in northern Michigan, became a Billboard Top 100 hit. "Hero" was a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio; "Never Let You Down" became one of the year's most played songs for Adult Top 40; and "Colorful" was a favorite in the film Rock Star, which included an appearance by Brian Vander Ark. The group soon was appearing around the country on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman, and in leading music magazines. Then, in 2009, the group tried a new sound with their CD A Family Album, which was indeed family-friendly music — but with a twist. Gone were the typi- cally silly rhymes often found on CDs marketed to children, and in their place were fun, original and clever lyrics for which the Verve Pipe was famous. A Family Album was followed by Are We There Yet? and the latest, Overboard. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $10 for those 16 and young- er. They may be purchased by calling (248) 661-1900, at www.theberman. org or at the Berman box office. Additionally, community members may anonymously purchase tickets for families with special needs or lower- income families to attend the concert.
