Lag B'Omer Blowout NEXTGen hosts a citywide celebration. ack in 2012, NEXTGen decided to redefine Lag b'Omer and lift it from its status as a minor Jewish holiday into a community-wide celebration: the Lag b'Omer Blowout. NEXTGen Detroit hosted its third annual Lag b'Omer Blowout on Sunday, May 18, at the Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield. The event brought together young adults from throughout the community. With more than 250 in attendance, it was the largest Lag b'Omer Blowout ever. Music was flowing and delicious foods were being grilled as Rabbi Yisrael Pinson of Chabad of Greater Downtown Detroit, Rabbi Leiby Burnham of Partners in Torah Detroit and community leader Gary Torgow led discussions on the holiday's meaning. Guests enjoyed a barbeque dinner of hamburgers, hotdogs and other delicious dishes including summer beverages and craft beers selected by the Lag b'Omer Blowout chairs Julie Marx, Pinson and Burnham. Josh Goldberg, a Lag b'Omer Blowout committee member, said,"A couple of years ago, we [the YAD Jewish Life Committee] were thinking of an idea for an event, and the minor Jewish holiday Lag b'Omer came up because celebrating it seemed enjoyable, worthwhile and doable. "Because the holiday's not widely celebrated, we kind of came out of nowhere throwing a huge young- adult Lag b'Omer event. It's been said that we 'put Lag b'Omer on the map."' Following dinner, guests gathered outside for a huge bonfire where they roasted s'mores, reunited with old friends and met new ones. Good vibes were definitely felt throughout the night. The blowout was the first of many amazing summer events from NEXTGen Detroit. This event was a partnership between NEXTGen Detroit, Friendship Circle and Partners Detroit, and was generously sponsored in part by Jeffery Warsaw. ❑ For info on upcoming NEXTGen Detroit summer events, visit www.facebook. com/CommunityNEXT.
