lenges.
"We're really looking at a white
board with all options on the
table he said. "We're looking at
overlapping of programming and
under-utilization of facilities.
We're examining each program
to see if it serves the JCC mission
and if it is profitable, although
profitability will not be the driv-
ing force
Adds Kaufman, "Now that we
know what we're looking at, we
can ask ourselves, 'Are we doing
too many things?' 'What changes
can be made to start to stabilize
the budget?"'
Kaufman gives informal Jewish
education as an example. "There
are lots of programs coming out
of the center, lots of programs
coming out of Partners in Torah,
lots of programs coming out of
the Alliance for Jewish Education
and many of the synagogues.
Where is the duplication?"
Many areas of the center were
running independently as silos,
Kaufman added. "Are there more
synergies that could get built
from a revenue side and expense
side?"
Kaufman said that next steps
include looking at privatization
of some programs, evaluat-
ing talent, modifying the JCC's
footprint or renting out space to
other entities that fall within the
JCC's mission.
For example, the JCC receives
a percentage of revenue from
Adventure Park, which opened
this year on land adjacent to the
JCC building.
"That's a win-win:' Kaufman
said. "It's not just streamlining at
the JCC; I think it's community-
wide."
The JCC is also interviewing for
a chief financial officer. "Financial
One has been great, but long-term
it's not a viable model to do busi-
ness:' Kaufman said.
A search for a permanent CEO
has not been started. Kaufman
expects Issner, who is working
to present an intermediate plan
for stabilization of the center, to
remain at his post through the
end of the year.
In tandem with that work,
much of the energy at the JCC
now is being expended on pre-
paring and getting sponsors for
the Maccabi Games, which are
coming to the center in August.
"Operationally we have a
good team, and there are no
issues there Kaufman said.
