Lectures Set In Memory of Rabbi Eliezer Cohen

T

he late Rabbi Eliezer
Cohen was an outspoken
critic of developments in
his Orthodox movement on mat-
ters of personal status. What many
Orthodox rabbis saw as higher
standards in conversion, eligibil-
ity to marry and traditional Jewish
divorce, he did not.
A lecture on these topics will be
presented in his memory at Yeshivat
Akiva in Southfield at 10 a.m.
Sunday, June 1, by Rivkah Lubitch,
an adviser on Jewish law to Israel's
rabbinical courts who has published
about personal status in Jewish
and Israeli law. She also serves on
the board of the Center for Justice
for Women in Israel and teaches at

Brandeis University.
Lubitch and her husband, Rabbi
Dr. Ronen Lubitch, will teach as
visiting scholars to Congregation
Or Chadash in Oak Park on Friday
night, May 30, and Saturday, May
31.
Ronen Lubitch is rabbi at Kibbutz
Nir Etzion on Mount Carmel in
Israel and is a Silver Fellow at the
Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard
University.
Rabbi Cohen was the founding
rabbi of Or Chadash and taught at
Akiva for nearly 40 years.
Co-sponsors of the lecture are
Or Chadash, Akiva and the Cohn-
Haddow Center at Wayne State
University.
