arts & entertainment >> the best of everything Scinta-lating High-energy Scintas coming to Andiamo C elebrity Showroom. p OTPOURRI If you've never seen them, or even if you have, you won't want to miss the Scintas, appearing 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Andiamo Celebrity Showroom, next to Andiamo Italia restau- rant, 14 Mile, between Mound and Van Dyke, Warren. They're terrific with their singing, jok- ing, celebrity impressions, etc., and fast- moving musical comedy fun entertainment ... I have seen them numerous times and always walk away saying how wonderful they are in their fast-moving variety show. In fact, it sounds uncanny, but I don't recall ever seeing them perform the same show twice ... The last time I saw Frankie and Joe Scinta, Peter O'Donnell and Janien Valentine were at the D Hotel in Las Vegas, where they are huge favorites, and as I was leaving, the audience was still standing and applauding. The Scintas usually play to sell-out crowds, so call in your reserva- tion as soon as possible ... (586) 268-3200. RECENTLY HITTING his 100th birthday, Herman Frankie Scinta Weber, founder of Weber's restaurant, Jackson Street, Ann Arbor, probably still remembers when, back in 1937, he opened his Hi-Speed Inn on the outskirts of Ann Arbor. Herman wore a white apron, cooking, busing tables for only 40 people ... and sometimes even pumping gas from the two Hi-Speed pumps outside. As the years rolled by, he opened in 1969 what became one of the few independent family-owned hotel and restaurant proper- ties in the United States. It was a full-service restaurant, originally called Weber's, then Weber's Supper Club and, in the middle '50s, just plain Weber's ... Even before then, I think it was named Weber's Good Food Restaurant. Weber's today is run by his son Ken ... What started out just selling hamburgers and beer, etc., is now serving its excellent prime rib specialty since 1950, about 15 fish variet- ies, steaks, pastas, etc. BEING ONE OF the restaurants in a chain, small or large, would ordinarily be considered the same as the others. However, there is a difference ... quite a bit so ... with the Greek Islands Bar & Grill that overlooks the Farmington Hills Golf Course on 11 Mile Road and Halsted, Farmington Hills. For one, it is the only one in the four Greek Islands chain that also has liquor, wine and beer. In addition to the regular, large Greek Islands menu selec- tions, it serves steaks, more choices of fish, pasta, etc. Greek Islands Bar & Grill, run by popular operating partners Nick Moutafis and Kathy Zervos, is a big favorite with golfers, local residents and those from elsewhere who enjoy the food in a comfortable and amiable atmosphere. THE HUGE CARVING of two men at the bar of an English pub that so many people have seen above the restaurant's entrance has caused much conversation among those who never noticed it there before ... It might look so familiar. Perhaps they had seen it on the cover of a book of matches or in family pictures or were told about it by fathers, grandfathers and great-grand- fathers, etc. The wooden pictorial carved mural that welcomes visitors to Kruse and Muer on Main in Rochester, was on the building when Bill Kruse and the late Chuck Muer took over the site. It had been stored in a ware- house for years by Sanford Freedman, whose father, Joe Freedman, and Bill Boesky owned the Brass Rail on Adams, across from Grand Circus Park in Detroit ... and sold it to a former tenant of the Rochester locale. There were two signs alike ... above the Brass Rail on Adams and on the Brass Rail at Michigan and Griswold, next to Kinsel's Drugs. The original was made of sheet metal, but the gloss was wearing off, so it was covered with wood ... Those who might have seen the Brass Rail ones may recall that one English gentleman has his foot on a brass rail and the other fellow is carving a roast ... The one at Kruse & Muer has him cutting a piece of fish. MAIL DEPT. ... "Do you remember a restaurant called Archibald's, maybe in Birmingham in the late '70s? It had good onion soup" ... Judy Rosenthal. [I sure do. It was then owned by Ben Kasle, who also owned Berman's Chop House, Fox & Hounds and Uncle John's Pancake Houses. That French onion soup at Archibald's on Woodward in Birmingham when Benny had it was a pride and joy made the authentic French way ... Croutons from French bread, cara- melized onions, white wine and a thick layer of what I think was Gruyere cheese covering the bowl and overlapping at the sides. The onion soup sure was delicious!] "Thank you for remembering the anni- versary of Darbys restaurant. Do I ever 2013 Jewish News Winner _, plel c ALL Now & Cqp, (2•4li) 231-51i3i1 .cmtrAn.
