Alice Burdick Schweiger Special to the Jewish News F or the first time in the history of ABC's Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, the series features a Jewish "bachelorette": Andi Dorfman. One of the final three women on last season's The Bachelor, Dorfman won the hearts of fans after she bailed on bad-boy Juan Pablo, following their fantasy-suite date. One of her criticisms of Pablo, besides his self-centeredness, was that he never even asked about her religion. Now the tables have turned, and Dorfman is in the coveted position of handing out the roses, choosing and eliminating potential mates. This season debuted on May 19 (catch up with previ- ous episodes On Demand or online); new episodes air at 8 p.m. Mondays on ABC. "I am very happy:' says Dorfman, 27, an Atlanta, Ga., assistant district attorney who put her job on hold to find love. "America is about to meet a bunch of great guys. I'm excited to let everyone see this journey:' But this time, Dorfman is in control and made sure religion was a part of the conversations, even if it was off camera. "I discussed a lot of deeper things — religion, social values, political views:' says Dorfman, who earned an under- graduate degree from Louisiana State University and a law degree from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. "I really took the time to dig deeper with these guys to get to know them. These are everyday things that are important when it comes to a relation- ship:' Did she prefer to meet someone Jewish? "I'd say I'm definitely proud of my heritage she says. "My family grew up with great cultural and traditional things that we always did, and I think that's so fun to see in another person. [But] to be honest, I'm really just look- ing for somebody who's kind, that I get along with and who completes me:' Dorfman didn't want to be a part of the selection process for the 25 suitors. She asked the casting department to pick people that she might not ordinar- ily meet in everyday life. "I didn't want to know a single thing:' she says. "I didn't want to know a single name stepping out of that limo because I wanted everyone to be on a clean slate:' When picking Mr. Right, the no-non- sense bachelorette says she was looking RA M = M • = M - -=- ME • Up To 0 OFF SECOND ENTREE' Buy one entree' and receive half off your second entree'. Last year, her father, Hyman (Hy) Dorfman, who has a successful commer- cial printing business called Harp Ink in Duluth, Ga., was a hit with viewers dur- ing her hometown visit with Pablo. Once again, her father will be weighing in. "My dad is definitely more open to the dating process. You'll see a softer side to him, but he's always going to be my dad and always going to be protec- tive. "Before I left for this journey, I got some final moments with my mom and dad, and I said, 'Alright, last minute advice: Give it to me: And he looked at me and said, 'Pick the right one!" Dorfman isn't the first Jewish contes- tant on the show. That would be Jason Mesnick in 2009. The first Jewish "bach- elor:' a non-practicing Jew, married Molly Malaney, a Catholic woman from Grand Rapids, in a televised wedding in February 2010. Rosenbaum, a Jewish con- struction manager from Long Island, N.Y.; they had an all-expenses-paid, on- air interfaith wedding with Jewish tradi- tions in December 2012. Fans won't know if Dorfman finds love until the final episode, but she hinted that she has found her prince charming. The series runs through July, when everyone will know which lucky bachelor won that final rose. ❑ The Bachelorette airs at 8 p.m. Mondays on ABC. 19211 joill r uff i A- r1/4.7F,ATER JUNE 1 1181-5PM • DOWNTOWN ANN ARBOR P IN PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS LIVE MUSIC association CO.
