Lost Opportunity
Livni's failure to become prime
minister was the gravest misstep
on the part of the Israeli politi-
cal establishment. It was a lost
opportunity not only for Livni, but
also for Israelis, Palestinians and,
indeed, the entire world.
For, under Netanyahu's hard-
line, staunchly right-wing leader-
ship, Israel has suffered a damning
global public rleations crisis.
Kerry's recent
statements
asserting that
Israel would
face "increasing
isolation" in the
international
community if
the peace talks
were to fail were
lambasted by
many pro-Israel activists, but what
nearly everyone fails to understand
is that what Kerry said is not hypo-
thetical. Israel has faced increas-
ing global isolation ever since
Netanyahu stepped into the prime
minister's office in 2009.
This increas-
ing isolation
is not entirely
unfounded as
Netanyahu's
continued expan-
sion of Israeli
settlements in
the West Bank

What is most upsetting is that it
would never have occurred under
Livni's leadership had she become
prime minister. The obstinacy of
Israel's right-wing party leaders
to join a Kadima-led coalition
in 2008 was the greatest folly
in Israeli history, for Livni has
proven herself the only capable
leader willing to initiate dialogue
between Israel and the Palestinian
Authority.
The Livni Factor
Tzipi Livni has shown, time and
time again, her unwavering com-
mitment to peace, especially in her
role as Israel's chief negotiator this
past year. Indeed, a Livni govern-
ment would have halted Israel's
self-destructive policy of settlement
construction in the West Bank.
A Tzipi Livni government would
have ensured Israeli commit-
ment to a lasting peace between
Israel and Palestine. A Tzipi Livni
government would have paved
the way to bringing Iran's nuclear
program to its knees. A Tzipi Livni
government would have renewed
the global community's faith,
respect and renown of the State of
Israel.
It is all too plain: The recent
termination of peace talks and the
horrifying reconciliation between
Fatah and Hamas
has shown that
Israel needs Tzipi
Livni now more
than ever. She has
