OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT

osting 1,400 out-of-towners
is no small feat. With a little
over two months left before
JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest kick
off at the Joe Louis Arena, a team of
dedicated leaders and volunteers is
working overtime to make sure the week
Aug. 17-22 runs with as few hitches as
possible.
Among their tasks: lining up volun-
teers and host families, medical per-
sonnel, food and water, venues, signs,
security, transportation and more to
prepare for the influx of teenagers who
will stream into town to compete, cre-
ate, contribute their time and make new
friends.
There's still work to be done — and
more volunteers and host families are
needed — but here's a look so far at what
the 2014 JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest
look like so far in numbers:
• Detroit delegation: 300 teens
• Teams competing in the Games: 76
• ArtsFest participants: 65
• Signs: 3,000
• Monies raised: $1 million in cash and
in-kind donations
• Water bottles (needed): 20,000
• Number of sports played: 12
• Coaches: 150
• Sports venues: 10
• Creative disciplines (ArtsFest): 8
• Volunteers: 289
• Additional volunteers needed: 700
• Host families: 192
• Additional host families needed: 75
• States represented: 20
• Countries represented: U.S.A. and
Israel
• Number of Detroit teens who've par-
ticipated when Games were at home:
10,000
• Number of times Detroit has hosted
Maccabi (including this year) since the
Games' inception in 1982: 5
• Number of years ArtsFest has been
part of Maccabi: 9
Volunteers are needed in all areas,
from serving food and passing out water
to welcoming visitors. Host families are
also needed to house athletes and artists
during the week, which involves some
transportation duties. To volunteer, go to
www4ccdet.org/be-a-volunteer-maccabi
or call (248) 432-5500.
