student conflict resolution met separately
with groups of Jewish and Arab/Muslim stu-
dents "to explore mutual interests in coming
together in a joint conversation/dialogue
process" They had a joint meeting April 29.

ZOA Responds
In a letter to U-M dated May 16, the ZOA
stated, "We received your May 14th letter
in which you unequivocally state that the
University of Michigan does not tolerate
prejudice against Jews. Frankly, we see no
evidence to back up your statement ... there
is no indication that the university has taken
any concrete steps geared to remedying this
intolerable anti-Semitic hostility."
Regarding the Jewish-Arab/Muslim dia-
logue, the ZOA said it sounded "vague and
useless since there is no indication that it
must include the perpetrators of the hostil-
ity and the source of all the problems — the
members of SAFE. Even if SAFE members
were required to participate, the group has a
single-minded anti-Israel agenda that does
not in any way, shape or form include 'com-
ing together' and 'finding common ground'
with students who do not support their hate-
ful and vicious anti-Israel views"
The ZOA response stated, "venting isn't
enough. Students need to see that once the
university has listened to their concerns, the
university is going to take concrete steps to
actually address them"
The ZOA reiterated its urgings that U-M
take three steps to resolve the situation.
• Sanction SAFE for repeatedly violating
U-M rules and policies;
• Publicly condemn the conduct of SAFE
and of those students who issued death
threats and used anti-Semitic slurs like
"kike" and "dirty Jew";
• Issue a public statement that the univer-
sity has no intention of divesting from hold-
ings in Israel and that it remains opposed to
the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic divestment
campaign.
The ZOA reiterated that U-M's "legal
obligation to remedy anti-Semitic hostility
and ensure Jewish students a campus that
is physically and emotionally safe, pursu-
ant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of
1964, demands that action be taken"
