ith so many plastic surgeons in
the Detroit area, how does one
decide? This is a question that
Dr. Barak Tanzman encounters on a daily
basis. "Plastic surgeons are as diverse
as the patient's that they treat," says Dr.
Tanzman. This makes it a very confusing
decision for a patient if and when they
decide to undergo a cosmetic or recon-
structive procedure. "Aside from feeling
comfortable with the surgeon's bedside
manner, it is important that the patient
explore the surgeon's training and their
patient's results," adds Dr. Tanzman.
Dr. Tanzman has not always been a
Michigander. He was raised in southern
California where he has seen his fair share
of good and bad plastic surgery. He then
moved to Ohio where he attended Ohio
University for his undergraduate and
medical school studies, followed by his
five-years of general surgery residency
training. Dr. Tanzman is a board certified
plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He
has been practicing in the Detroit area
since 2010, when he joined Dr. Bruce Chau
at Chau Plastic Surgery upon completion
of his two-year fellowship in plastic and
reconstructive surgery through the Henry
Ford Health System.
Throughout his life, he has always
been involved in both music and art. It
is through this medium that Dr. Tanzman
found a field of practice where he can
meld his artistic eye with his knowledge
base and skill of surgery. He has received
extensive training in cosmetic surgery,
body reconstruction and hand surgery. He
understands the importance of a person's
self image and how this may affect him or
her both psychologically and socially. He
feels that everyone has an inner beauty
that is unique to that person. Dr. Tanzman
takes the time to get to know his patients
and understand their individual concerns.
He can then provide the educated
guidance that will help them choose
a procedure that will harmonize their
inner sense of self with a pleasing visual
aesthetic appearance.
Dr. Tanzman is on staff at multiple
hospitals throughout the city but performs
a majority of his surgeries at Huron Valley
Sinai Hospital in Commerce. It is here
that he performs a variety of cosmetic
procedures from breast augmentation,
tummy tucks, and facial rejuvenation
surgeries such as face and neck lifts,
eyelid surgery and rhinoplasties (nose
jobs). Dr. Tanzman uses the latest and
most effective technology for liposuction
to provide liposculpting using the Vaser®
ultrasound system. This system integrates
the technology of ultrasound with the
science of liposuction. "In my hands, this
allows me to most effectively remove fat
and sculpt the body while at the same

time provide some skin tightening in my
liposuction patients," says Dr. Tanzman.
Together with this technology and his skill,
even fit patients with "trouble spots", can
see dramatic results that help them to
accentuate their fitness goals.
At both his Berkley and Commerce
location, Dr. Tanzman offers a multitude
of non-surgical facial rejuvenation
options from Botox®, to fillers, to facial
volumizers such as Sculptra®. "I realize
that not every patient needs surgery or is
willing to undergo surgery, and for some
of these patients there are non-surgical
alternatives," says Dr. Tanzman.
As part of the physician staff at DMC
Huron Valley Sinai Hospital, Dr. Tanzman
sits on cancer committees and is an
active member through the breast cancer
center as one of the reconstructive
surgeons. "These days patients
undergoing mastectomy or lumpectomy
for breast cancer have many options for
reconstruction. With the advent of the
use of human donor skin and infrared
laser imaging of the tissue during the
reconstruction, aesthetic outcomes are
the best they have ever been," says Dr.
Tanzman.
