Eighty-five percent of survey respondents had visited Israel more than once and 70 percent had lived there for at least five months. The Jewish community has recently discussed at great length the findings of the Pew Research Study of U.S. Jews, which, among other things, has high- lighted the search for ways to engage a liberal, increasingly cultural, Jewish community with Israel. "Habonim Dror is one of the most successful ventures connecting Jewish youth to Zionism for generations:' says Member of Knesset Isaac Herzog, newly elected chair of the Israeli Labor Party. "It is an idealistic movement that iden- tifies with liberal Israeli society while creating the right formula for cultural Jewish continuity." The study also found that 75 percent of HDNA alumni consider them- selves to be politically progressive. Remarkably, nearly 20 percent hold leadership positions in Jewish or Israel- related organizations, and nearly 50 percent give to Jewish or Israel-related groups committed to social change. Sarah Waldbott, a recent Tavor alum originally from Oak Park, has followed this path. "The summers I spent at Camp Tavor and my time with Habonim are without a doubt the most influential experiences of my life she says. "I cur- rently work at Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice with several Habonim alumni. I am inspired to pur- sue justice through a Jewish lens because of what I learned Sarah and experienced Waldbott with Habonim Dror" These Metro Detroit alumni exemplify the study's findings that HDNA unites progressive values, a strong connection to Israel and a love of Jewish cultural traditions.
