The Best Gets Better

Joe Muer Seafood, Renaissance Center, Detroit, shines as a dining destination.

D

iversity plays a major role in
many new restaurants ... Today's
finer dining at upscale restau-
rants demands it ... And few restaurateurs
know the true ways of its originations and
presentations.
Certainly few equal or better than Joe
Vicari.
Into the third year of his Joe Muer
Seafood in the GM Global Renaissance
Center, Downtown Detroit, Vicari, a highly
acknowledged dining diversifier, contin-
ues to provide varied differences from
the original while achieving its rank as a
splendid seafood destination go-to restau-
rant.
This, of course, while still retaining
much of the one-time very popular origi-
nal Joe Muer traditional menu.
From day one back in September over
two years ago, the additions of a raw bar
and sushi bar and fresh seafood flown
in daily from all over the world were
genius presentations that took a lot of
pre-thought ... Never changing the menu
offerings from the original Joe Muer
Seafood operation on Gratiot,
without additional wonderful
items, at no time ever seri-
ously entered Vicari's mind.
But making alterations
did ... And what worked
stayed... What didn't had
early exits.
The Joe Muer Seafood
of yesteryears on Gratiot
is emulated and the one of
today still continues to serve
Joe Vicari
time-honored favorites like
stuffed flounder, Dover sole,
whitefish, Lobster Thermidor, clam chow-
der, Manhattan fish chowder, etc.
The menu changes monthly, but the
traditional dishes always remain ... and
new features are added ... with at least six
chef's specials varied on a regular basis ...
Dining features that change daily represent

the unique items that one of
10 Joe Muer Seafood buyers
from around the globe sup-
plies to the restaurant.
Seasonal specialties remain
top choices like Nantucket
scallops, Alaskan halibut,
Tristan Rock lobster tails,
etc. ... plus signature dishes
that include Dover sole a la
Meniere, spiced crust ahi
tuna, grilled Block Island
swordfish Oscar, etc. ... plus
prime-cut steaks, chicken
dishes, Colorado lamb, etc.
The Joe Muer Seafood menu of today
sparkles with savory elegance ... and
includes best-selling items rarely found at
too many other seafood establishments ...
oven-roasted barramundi, George's Bank
sea scallops, braised Hawaiian mahi mahi,
etc. ... Also dishes that no other sea-farin'
restaurant in this region can boast of serv-
ing ... like roasted Atlantic monkfish, Thai
scallops appetizer and other specialties ...
And the Joe Muer Seafood sushi bar prides
itself on having secretly
blended presentations of
its Renaissance roll and Joe
Muer roll.
Other than the fine selec-
tions found on its daily bill
of fare, visitors in the know
often opt for favorites not
listed on the menu ... as
an example, the luscious
broiled lobster stuffed with
jumbo lump crab meat ...
truly a dining sensation.
So long as the needed
items are in house, Joe Muer Seafood in
the Renaissance Center will make what-
ever the customer desires ... whether from
yesteryear's or today's dining choices.
Since its reincarnation opening in 2011,
Joe Muer Seafood, as established by Joe
Vicari, has become an even greater des-

OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT ... The
young girl sprang to answer the telephone.
"Darling, how are you? This is
Mummy."
"Oh, Mummy," said the young girl cry-
ing, "I'm having a bad day. The baby won't
eat and the washing machine won't work.
I've sprained my ankle, and I'm hobbling
around. On top of all this, the house is
a mess, and I'm supposed to have the
Minskys and Rosens for dinner tonight. I
haven't even had a chance to go shopping."
The voice on the other end said in sym-
pathy, "Darling, let Mummy handle it. Sit
down, relax and close your eyes. I'll be
over in half an hour. I'll do your shopping,
tidy up the house and cook your dinner.
I'll feed the baby, and I'll call an engineer
I know who'll fix your washing machine.
Now stop crying. I'll even call your hus-
band, David, at the office and tell him he
should come home to help out for once
"David?" said the young girl. "Who's
David?"
"David is your husband! Is this 208-
123-3750?"
"No, this is 208-123-3749:"
"Oh, I'm sorry. I must have dialed the
wrong number."
There is a short pause ... "Does this
mean you're not coming?"

tination seafood restaurant
... And today is listed among
the busiest restaurants in
Metropolitan Detroit.
Business leaders, politicians,
sports figures, etc. are among
regulars for the usual power
lunches ... And, at night, Joe
Muer transforms itself into the
Great Gatsby era with people
both dressed up and casual as
they have fun, dine in style and
delight in the elegance of the
flowing glasses of choice wines.
All this while enjoying the seven-day-a-
week piano stylings of key-ticklers playing
requests and, on many occasions, also
singing.
The opening of a yesteryears dining
icon is never easy ... and this wasn't at the
beginning ... But the hands of someone
with keen restaurant knowledge, such as
Vicari, is a tremendous asset ... and the
short two-years-plus have done much in
proving its excellent existence as the new
Joe Muer that has attained world-class
recognition ... And a true Detroit pride.
