Saving Hearts

I

Steve Stein
Contributing Writer

I t seems like it happens every
school year.
A young athlete, seemingly
perfectly healthy and strong, dies sud-
denly at a practice or competition. The
autopsy reveals a heart problem was
the cause of death.
Former Detroit Lions
great Charlie Sanders
is taking a proactive
approach to prevent more
tragedies. His not-for-
profit foundation is raising
funds so male and female
athletes ages 14-18 can be
screened for undetected
heart conditions before
they practice or compete.
"It's time to stop play-
ing Russian roulette with
young athletes:' Sanders
said. "Most (required)
physicals for student-athletes don't
include heart checks and some fami-
lies can't afford them:'
He said a recent screening of 75
Detroit Police Athletic League athletes
done through his foundation found
three with heart conditions.
The major fundraiser for Sanders'
foundation is the annual Have A Heart
Save A Life celebrity golf outing. The
third annual event will be held June 2
at Knollwood Country Club in West
Bloomfield.
The outing committee includes
David Levine, Jarrett Levine, Andrew
Barbas, Alan Harvith and Jeff Sakwa
from the Jewish community. Bill
Keenist, the Lions' senior vice presi-
dent of communications, also is on the
committee along with Sanders.
"It was easy to get involved. This is a
tremendous cause:' David Levine said.
After raising more than $40,000 the
first year and more than $60,000 the
second year, this year's outing goal is
more than $125,000.
"It costs about $8 for a heart screen-
ing, so you can see how far the money
goes:' Sanders said.
All the spots to play golf with the
impressive list of celebrities Sanders
has rounded up were sold out three
months ago. A dozen fivesomes in the
nine-hole morning round and 34 five-
somes in the 18-hole afternoon round
are filled.
But there's still time to sign up for
dinner ($200) or dinner and use of
Knollwood's pool, tennis courts and
saunas during the afternoon ($250).
Go to www.haveaheartsavealife.org.

The deadline is May 30. Sponsorship
opportunities also are available.
Among the celebrities who will
play golf or make appearances at
the outing are Lions stars Matthew
Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong
Suh, Reggie Bush and Golden Tate;
Michigan State basketball coach
Tom Izzo and football coach Mark
Dantonio; former Chicago Bears coach
Mike Ditka; former Detroit
Mayor Dave Bing; ex-Pitts-
burgh Steelers great Mean
Joe Greene; and several
former Lions and Detroit
Tigers.
The Lions' 2014 draft
choices and rookie free
agents will be introduced at
the dinner that follows golf.
FOX 2 Detroit will broad-
cast a telethon hosted by
sportscaster Dan Miller
from 6:15-7 p.m. at the
outing, and there will be a
silent auction of sports memorabilia.
To demonstrate the purpose of the
day, Oak Park High School athletes
will undergo heart screenings.
Sanders, 67, was inducted into the
NFL Hall of Fame in 2007. He was
honored last year by the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation with its
Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award.

It's Softball Season

Play ball! The Intercongregational
Men's Club Softball League has begun
its new season.
Opening day was Sunday, May 18.
Fundraising non-league games for the
West Bloomfield Relay for Life will be
held Sunday, May 25.
Each of the 12 league teams, the
same number as last year, will play an
expanded schedule of 15 regular-sea-
son league games including five dou-
bleheaders on Sundays at Community
Sports Park in West Bloomfield.
Every team will compete in the
league playoffs that will follow the end
of the regular season in early August.
Temple Israel No. 1 is back to defend
its league championship.
Chuck Freedman (Temple Kol
Ami), Michael Betman (Adat Shalom
Synagogue) and Steve Achtman
(Temple Israel) run the league, which
began play in 1996.
For information, see the league's
website at mensclubsoftball.org .
