he best part of the morning may
be brewing that hot cup of cof-
fee. Sanka was the first brand
of instant decaffeinated coffee to become
popular in the United States. Sanka first
appeared in 1909 when it was originally
marketed under the name "Dekafa"
In 1923, the brand took the name
"Sanka" when it was initially sold in two
New York coffee houses. Throughout the
1930s, the brand was heavily advertised
with the claim: "Drink Sanka Coffee and
Sleep!"
The goal was to develop a coffee for the
caffeine sensitive, thereby allowing coffee
lovers to get their morning and nightly
cup without the tension or nervousness
caused by too much caffeine.
Sanka was also a sponsor of major
television shows such as I Love Lucy and
The Andy Griffith Show in the 1950s

and 1960s. As a certified kosher prod-
uct — and a product advertised in the
Jewish News — Sanka decaffeinated cof-
fee became very popular among Jewish
households.
So, the next time you sit down for your
morning cup of Joe, remember that Sanka
decaffeinated coffee will still allow you to
"Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!"
