'An Evening For Starfish' Annual dinner for Starfish Family Services honors longtime supporters of the organization. A n Evening for Starfish" raised funds in support of vulner- able children and families in Metro Detroit on May 1 at The Henry in Dearborn. The event featured the 2014 Starfish Great Hearts Award, which was presented to three families who have impacted the mission of Starfish through their generosity and advocacy, including the Jack Demmer family, the Citrins and U.S. Rep. John D. Dingell and Debbie Dingell. John Dingell and wife, Debbie, with Starfish CEO Ann Kalass Michael and Marcy Feldman Nancy Waldman and Starfish Chairman Ron Sollish Remembering The Fallen Yom Hazikaron program commemorates those who gave their lives so Israel can continue. y om Hazikaron, Israel's National Memorial Day, was marked with a community-wide program May 4 attended by nearly 600 people at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts in West Bloomfield. The event was coordinated by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit in collabo- ration with Israel program partners, local agencies and the Yom HaZikaron committee. The ceremony began with the sounding of a memo- rial siren and included reading the names of fallen soldiers from the Detroit Partnership2Gether region, a Debbie Levin at the JCC memorial memorial candle-lighting, prayers, songs and national anthems sung by the Hillel Day School choir. Many program participants served in the Israel Defense Forces, have family that served in the IDF or have children currently serving in the IDF. An IDF paratrooper spoke about his service and the loss of his friend in the second Lebanon War.
