Annual concert raises funds
for gift bags for cancer patients.

Shelli Liebman Dorfman
Contributing Writer

E

laine Greenberg remembers
all too well being a cancer
patient undergoing treatment.
For eight years, the 14-year ovar-
ian cancer survivor has been working
to make those moments a little more
manageable for others fighting the
disease.
She visits them, sometimes singing
to and with them, and brings a gift
bag.
Greenberg is a retired piano and
voice teacher as well as a cantorial
soloist and junior choir conductor
at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
She fundraises for select items to fill
her gift bags through sales of her CDs
of uplifting music and inspirational
talks — and through annual Jazzalot
concerts.
This year's event, "Some Like It...
Hot – Hot – Hot:' will be held at 7
p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at sponsoring
Temple Israel. The concert will feature
George "Saxman" Benson, the Cliff
Monear Trio and the young musicians
of the Ann Arbor-based Southeastern
Music Academy Jazz Ensemble. The
other sponsor is Living For Music, a
nonprofit created by Greenberg and
her husband, Shelly, to produce and
market music for cancer patients.
Jazzalot '14 will be held in memory
of former Temple Israel cantor Harold
Orbach and Greenberg's friend, Jackie
Wells, who lost her battle with cancer
in February at age 85.
"This will be celebrations of their
lives:' Greenberg said. "Cantor Orbach
was my mentor, my teacher, my
friend. I learned so much from him:'
Greenberg of Farmington Hills met

Wells following the publication of a
Detroit Free Press article about the
West Bloomfield Jewish Community
Center-based Cancer Thrivers
Network for Jewish Women — cancer
survivors whose knitting group cre-
ates blankets included in Greenberg's
gift bags.
"After the article ran, the JCC was
inundated with yarn and yarn squares
from all over the country to be used
for the blankets:' Greenberg said.
Wells sent a letter saying she was
inspired by the women who donate
their time to knit them.
"Jackie's note made its way to Sharon
Rocklin who chairs the Thrivers knit-
ting group:' Greenberg said. "Jackie
had just been diagnosed with ovarian
cancer so Sharon and I, and our hus-
bands, took her a gift bag with a gor-
geous blanket knit by Cancer Thrivers.
We began writing and calling her and
started a friendship.
"She was a fantastic, fascinating,
caring, giving woman who was once a
model painted by Norman Rockwell:'
said Greenberg, who is Great Lakes
regional coordinator of the Ovarian
Cancer National Alliance's Survivors
Teaching Students: Saving Women's
Lives.
Funds raised from the Jazzalot
concert and Greenberg's CDs help to
purchase gift items for patients with
any type of cancer.
"The expression on their faces
when they open these bags makes it
so worthwhile she said. "Sometimes
when I bring the bags I sing to the
patients, but I found it is more impor-
tant for me to talk with them and
listen to their stories. I do this because
it's what I wish someone would have
done for me:'

For the 7 p.m. May 27 concert at Temple Israel, tickets are available at
the door or by sending a check and self-addressed envelope to Living
For Music Inc., 34056 W.13 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48331, and
picking up pre-paid tickets at the door. $30 each. Cash or checks only.
Greenberg's fundraising CDs are available at LivingForMusic.com .
