T
wo icons of Detroit's Jewish
community, Alfred Taubman
and Judith Levin Cantor,
will reflect on the history, the stories
and the people that made us who
we are today at the Jewish Historical
Society's 55th Annual Meeting, at 7
p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
Taubman is receiving the Leonard
N. Simons History Award, an annual
tribute that honors those who have
made outstanding contributions to
the enrichment, preservation and dis-
semination of Michigan Jewish history.
Taubman, whose memoir Threshold
Resistance was published in 2007, was
selected for his commitment to sharing
and preserving his own life accomplish-
ments and memories as well as those of
other community leaders.
He uses historical lessons to help
ensure that mistakes are not repeated
and has played a critical role in helping
the community build on the successes
and sacrifices of the past. He has sup-
ported the mission and work of the
JHSM through his philanthropy, helping
to endow the continued publication of
Ride In A Racecar,

Racing are hosting an open track day

anyone that would like to try rac-

Karmanos Institute for Melanoma
Research.

to take a passenger seat in a racing
car during this fundraiser.
Kenny "the Car Guy" Walters of
Mufflers and More in Walled Lake
invites curious speedsters to ride in
the passenger seat of a race car for
Michigan Jewish History and JHSM's
youth and adult tour programming.
Cantor, who was inducted into the
Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in
2013, will be reflecting on the stories
and milestones of the Jewish Historical
Society, which is celebrating its 55th
anniversary this year.
Cantor, author of the award-winning
2001 book Jews in Michigan, has been
deeply involved with JHSM for more
than two decades, having served as
president, editor of Michigan Jewish
History and endowment chair. More
importantly, she helped to craft and
create some of JHSMs most meaningful
and important programs and exhibits.
An astute historian and researcher,
Cantor has also discovered some of our
more interesting Michigan Jewish his-
tory — stories she'll share at the May
20 event.

3Balls Racing was founded in 2005
by three automotive engineers look-
ing for a safe and legal way to push
the limits of their driving and their
vehicles. The cancer cause is close
to the heart of 3Balls Racing, whose
leader, Ken Grulich, is a melanoma
survivor. Grulich, was diagnosed
with melanoma in 2011. He under-
went treatment at Karmanos and
after beating the disease, dedicated
his group to helping find a cure.
