He looks at his life as his cup being "overflowing." His wife, Jacqui, expresses this grateful plea for others sign up to become organ donors: "Steve and I will never know the person or their family who gave him a second chance at life. The only way that we can repay their generosity is to ask others to give as selflessly. I am begging each of you to visit one of two websites: www.organdonor.gov or www.hrsa.gov. "Even though you may have already agreed to be a donor on your driver's license, it is still important to register online. This truly states your wishes and helps your family to not have to make that decision for you." Marilynn Jones East Lansing Key-Shaped Challah Is A Post-Pesach Tradition There is a special custom among observant Jews to make the first shab- bat challah after Pesach to be in the form of a key. This custom is called Challah Maftayach (literally, a challah key). Representing a request for Hashem to open the Shaarey Shamayim (Gates of Heaven) to receive our prayers for good health, livelihood and all man- ner of blessings, the key is available at bakeries in Israel or, as shown in the picture, prepared in private homes, like this one by my wife, Lea. Jonathan Brateman Southfield B'Tselem Misrepresents Israel's Role In Territories Regarding the Point/Counterpoint article "West Bank Is Under 'Military Occupation:" authored by Jessica Montell, executive director of B'Tselem (May 1, page 39), it is a blatant hit piece on the IDF — ignoring history, mixing fact with propaganda and spouting mis- information. Firstly, occupation resulted because Israel was forced to defend itself in three wars started by combined Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian armies. Were it not for those attacks, Israel would not have been forced to take and administer the disputed territories. Remember, when Egypt accepted the Camp David Accords, Israel returned almost all the conquered and admin- istered Egyptian lands (Egypt did not want the return of Gaza). Over 90 percent of the present dis- puted territories (Judea and Samaria) would have been turned over to the Palestinians if they would have accept- ed the Oslo Accords, negotiated in good faith and recognized the State of Israel. Instead, in contravention of their pledge, the Palestinians continued their terrorist attacks. In fact, Yasser Arafat stated that the objective of his agree- ment was not the establishment of two states, but only a step toward the elimi- nation of Israel and its replacement by a Palestinian state. Israel must retain a military pres- ence in the disputed territories until the Palestinian Authority stops the violence against Israel, recognizes its existence and negotiates in good faith. To do oth- erwise courts national suicide. Montell claims that Palestinians in the administered territories are denied their rights and subjected to the "whims" of the Israeli government. She does not state that numerous times the Israeli Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Palestinians in the disputed territories. We can get a look into the mindset, if not motives, of B'Tselem by read- ing Chapter 5 of Edwin Black's book Financing the Flames. Black reveals through interviews and actual experi- ence how B'Tselem stages video events to purposely make the IDF look bad and oppressive. Irving Ginsberg, Ph.D. Farmington Hills Israeli Military Rule Is Needed In Some Areas I would like to make a few factual cor- rections to the article "West Bank is Under 'Military Occupationn" (May 1, page 39), written by Jessica Montell, Yiddish Limerick Ask Attorney Ken Gross about... Caroline Glick, deputy managing editor of the Jerusalem Post, charged "B'Tselem and other allegedly human rights groups are organizations in Israel with documented histories of falsifying and distorting date Montell writes that "all Palestinians are subject to jurisdiction of the Israeli military." The facts are that after the Oslo Accord in 1993, Israel withdrew its military rule from some parts of Judea and Samaria, which was at that time divided into three administrative divi- sions, as follows: Area A: This is where 55 percent of Palestinians in Judea and Samaria live. Both the security and administration here are totally in the hands of the Palestinians, not the Israeli army. Area B: This is where 41 percent of Letters on page 6 Much Can You 0 How Afford to Lose? My guess is "Nothing!" Let's talk Wealth Accumulation and Preservation. To me, "Accumulation" is saving future income so that it grows over time via investment. To maximize what you can save, you must minimize expense. Here, "debt elimination" is critical. If you pay high interest on credit card debt, every dollar spent on interest is another dollar that does not go to savings and you lose the dollar and the growth over time if it was invested. By now, you should know we can help to eliminate debt. Wealth "Preservation" comes after - once you have the money, you need to plan so that it is not exhausted by nursing home care.
