Tent from page 36 CLEAR WRITING He added, "There is a serious differ- ence of opinion in the community on J Street, and whether they are more pro- peace than pro-Israel. "They have taken several sides of positions, and their positions have morphed, I would say. There's enough of a record on issues of sanction and pushing the American administration, there's enough of a debate and discus- sion to disagree as to how pro-Israel they are This is certainly the view of Farley Weiss, the leader of the National Council of Young Israel, a national net- work of Modern Orthodox synagogues, who said that J Street's actions have placed it outside of the pro-Israel camp. "If you have a record, it's hard to say that this isn't who we are he said. By defending the United Nations' Goldstone report, "that even Goldstone doesn't defend" anymore, he said, "they're out of the mainstream:" The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) campaigned aggressively against J Street's bid. Ahead of the vote, ZOA distributed 18 bullet points for why it believed J Street should not be admit- ted to the Conference and issued press releases slamming J Street's statements on the Palestinian unity deal and Secretary of State John Kerry's remark warning that Israel could become an "apartheid state Dr. Charles Jacobs —president of Boston-based Americans for Peace and Tolerance, the group behind the new anti-J Street documentary The Street Challenge — explained that J Street breaks a long-honored tradition between American Jews and Israel. "[American Jews] can freely criticize Jewish leaders in Israel — we can do it publicly, but we who do not live there or have our children on the front lines do not have the right to use our American power to circumvent Israeli democracy, and to try to lobby to get an American administration to impose our views and policies on the Israelis. ... J Street's entire program is designed to break this longstanding agreement; Jacobs told INS.org. In its statement announcing the rejection of J Street, the Presidents Conference noted that other groups have failed to gain admission on the first try in the past. "A two-thirds affirmative vote of the member organizations is a significant threshold:' the statement said. "Some present member organizations did not initially achieve the necessary support but subsequently re-applied and are now members." In an interview with JTA, J Street's president, Jeremy Ben-Ami, said the organization had "no plans at this time" to reapply. 646 1 8"ENZgrranlarsi CI LAKES URGENT CARE p to LI.tare WOO .1ourStall I.Vent IslheMews F. "We believe maximizing freedom of entry and access for faculty world- wide will facilitate international understanding and enhance research and teaching everywhere," Nelson wrote in a statement concerning the resolution. "We urge our fellow MLA members to join the hundreds already in opposition to this flawed resolution that unfairly singles out only one country." He added that there had been no actual investigation of the claims. The AAUP, he said, followed stringent guidelines for addressing concerns like those listed in the resolution, while the MLA has no such guidelines. "There is a fair question as to why we're having resolutions about Israel with the number of problems in aca- demia: EMU's Shichtman said, while noting that the resolution's support- ers framed it as an issue of academic freedom rather than of a purely political stance. "As a director of Jewish studies, I see in my community real anxiety about this rhetoric. In some cases, the e"e rhetoric is excessive and these attacks stifle speech. It is getting harder and harder within the academy to speak in support of Israel — this issue is closing debate and not opening it." Shichtman is concerned that the resolution is "an early gesture for a more radical BDS proposal." One such proposal, an emergency propos- al to declare the MIAs solidarity for the American Studies Association's (ASA) pro-BDS stance, was voted down by a large margin during the January meeting. But Resolution 2014-1, Shichtman warned, "will open the door" for future such resolutions. "That is what I think the framers of the proposal are hoping and expecting:' Shichtman, however, believes the MLXs membership will make the right decision. "I'm cautiously optimistic," he said. "I think it is a really bad pro- posal, objectively, and I think that most members are going to see that because the logic in it is flawed, and I think that many members of MLA understand that it is very inappro- priate for us to single out a particu- lar nation, and what it means for us to be singling out this particular nation." ❑ Tim McMahon, Counselor MA, LLPC, NCC Nationally Board Certified Focus on Aging Issues...Depression...Dementia...
