Elizabeth Applebaum Special to the Jewish News S ometimes life presents a win-win situation, and sometimes it's a win-win- win-win-win. In the case of the JCC Maccabi Games & 14111 ArtsFest, it's definitely the latter, says Miriam Bergman of West Bloomfield, co-chair of the event's JCC Miriam Bergman Cares (which coordinates participants' volunteer activities). The kids win, the community wins and the volun- teers win because it's a lot of fun, it introduces them to new friends, and no matter a volunteer's title, from a chair of the entire program to the person passing out water bottles, "we all work together to create something positive and, at the end of the day, we can all shake hands and say, 'Job well done:" The JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest will be Aug. 17-22 in Detroit, and teen athletes and art- ists from around the world are set to attend. At least 1,000 volunteers are needed, but volunteering doesn't Yiddish Book Center Gets National Honor The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced that the Yiddish Book Center of Amherst, Mass., is one of 10 recipients of this year's National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The field's highest national honor will be presented in mean working eight hours a day the entire six days — or even knowing a single thing about sports or art. Men and women 18 and older are needed for everything from serving food to cheering on the athletes to medical supervision, and time slots range from one hour to 100. One of the reasons Bergman likes volunteering is because the Games/ ArtsFest offer something to every participant, regardless of ability (while there is competition, that is not the focus of the program), and watching Jewish teens from around the world connect "is like nothing else I've ever seen:' she says. Volunteers are there every step of the way. Bergman helps "for the sheer joy of putting something great together for these kids to be able to experi- ence:' The event showcases Metro Detroit, "gives people the chance to come together and connects the community:' she says. "It takes a whole village to make this happen:' Bergman, whose professional background is in health care, also enjoys meeting other volunteers, invariably "the most fascinating people in the community; I learn a lot from the people I work with" and the chance to develop new skills.
