It's As Easy As 1-2-3

D

o you remember playing Hide and Seek? That
count to 100 was interminable! Learning to go
by lOs made things easier, but that was
just the beginning of numbers in our lives. The
whole concept of counting has imbedded itself
into our vocabulary.
Many youngsters were fans of Count von Count
on Sesame Street. He literally made things as easy
as 1-2-3 as he counted everything from times the
telephone rang to the floors in a building while
taking the elevator.
Having friends taught us to say, "Count on me
or, if the activity were not to our liking, "Count me
out:' If you were floored by someone's attitude or
action, you might say you were out for the count
and had never even stepped into a boxing ring.
To make a point of something's rarity, you might
say you could count on one hand the number of
times it happened. This would not apply, hopefully, if some-
one asked you to count your blessings. With many, you could
count yourself lucky.

JN CONTENTS

If you wish to strongly state your stand, you may follow
it with, "You can count on that!" Your determination would
shine through.
All too often, we attempt something with less-
than-desirable results and wish that we could try
again; hence: "That doesn't count." There are golf
fanatics who still use this lament but they label it
taking a mulligan.
If you are planning a job with NASA, you had
better master the countdown. (If you have spent
a New Year's Eve on Times Square, that should be
second nature to you).
Following the daily news, you should be most
familiar with the doings of local and national
politicos who are being charged with counts of
theft. If they are ever imprisoned, they may be
asked to regularly count off (to make sure they
have not escaped?).
One thing that I can count on to release tension is doing
counted cross stitch projects. They are as easy as knit 1, purl
2 — oops, wrong skill.

in the U.S. with two suitcases and
$90 in my pocket." Relatives and
Jewish social services helped him
settle in Los Angeles, find a place to
live, learn to drive and find work.
Years later, the innovation consultant
moved to Michigan to work for an
automotive company, settled down
and established his family here.
Not long ago, Grigory decided to
start his own company. He landed a
contract with a large corporation for
consultation and collaboration with
branch offices on opposite coasts.
This required travel, hotels, rental cars
and presentation materials. "They
gave me a purchase order, and that,
and our agreement, spelled out when
I would be paid, but it would take
months for that payment to work its
way through their system. In the
meantime, I had expenses, a promise
of future payments but no money."
A friend suggested Grigory call
Hebrew Free Loan, and remembering
the help he received when he came
to the U.S., Grigory did.
"I needed the money right away,
and they helped me in a very short
time," Grigory said. "I wasn't desti-
tute. What I needed was to bridge a
gap, but they saved me. As a result,
this phase of my project is about to
finish, and the money has been
repaid. This is a great organization
that is here to help, no matter the
circumstance."
