he Jewish Theological
Seminary (JTS) will honor
leaders from Metro Detroit
Conservative congregations at a gala
dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May
29, at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills.
A preeminent institution of Jewish
higher education, JTS integrates rigor-
ous academic scholarship and teaching
with a commitment to strengthening
Jewish lives and communities through-
out the world.
Some 41 JTS alumni currently live
in Michigan and serve as rabbis, can-
tors, Jewish educators and lay leaders.
An additional 11 local educators have
received advanced training in using
new curriculum and work at Hillel Day
School, the Frankel Jewish Academy
and area afternoon religious schools.
Funds raised from the event will go
for scholarships for students in JTS's
five schools.
The Shin honor will be awarded to
outstanding individuals who embody
commitment to Jewish education and
synagogue life. This year's recipients
are Dr. Michael and Norma Dorman
from Adat Shalom, Barry Levine from
Congregation B'nai Moshe, Joe and
Bobbie Lewis from Congregation Beth
Shalom, Herb and Janet Pont from
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Mark
and Ruth Webber from B'nai Israel
Synagogue, and Tim and Sara Zivian
Zwickl from Congregation Beth Ahm.
In addition, Beverly Baker will
receive JTS's Kotel HaKavod honor on
behalf of the Morris and Beverly Baker
Foundation for the foundation's lifetime
achievement.
The guest speaker at the dinner will
be Marc Gary, executive vice chancellor
and chief operating officer of JTS.
Beth Shalom and B'nai Moshe will
honor the Lewises and Levine respec-
tively during Shabbat services on May
10. Beth Ahm will honor the Zwickls
on Saturday, May 17, and Adat Shalom
will pay tribute to the Dormans on
May 24.
