Celebrating Israel
Jerusalem
The Spiritual And Physical Capital Of The Jewish
People For Over 3,000 Years
111 1 11 1 1
• Jews are indigenous to the region, maintaining a continuous
presence for over 3,000 years.
• Jerusalem has been the center and focus of Jewish life and
religion for three millennia.
• No Arab or Muslim state ever made Jerusalem its capital.
∎
• In the first century, Rome conquered the Jewish nation and
banned Jews from Jerusalem.
• Jews resettled in Jerusalem when permitted by later rulers and
have continuously resided there since 1187.
• In the 1860s, Jews remerged as Jerusalem's majority and in
1867 built the first neighborhoods outside the Old City.
• Following the 1948 War, Jerusalem was divided for the first
time. Jordan invaded, seized the Old City and surrounding areas
now called East Jerusalem, and expelled all Jews.
Eight Over Eighty honorees: (standing) Bernard Moray, William Farber,

Bandalene and Sissi Lapides.
M
ay is the month nationwide
when organizations and
people celebrate our oldest
adults. Locally, there's a lot planned
for this May, including two Jewish
Senior Life (JSL) events celebrat-
ing the lifelong contributions and
successes of older adults in Metro
Detroit.
On May 4, eight remarkable indi-
viduals older than 80 will be honored
at Eight Over Eighty, a signature
event showcasing people dedicated to
their local community.
On May 16, Jewish adults age 95 or
older will be celebrated at the Bessie
Spector Oldest Jewish Americans
Brunch. Both events are open to the
public.
"The lessons learned and passed on
from one generation to the next are
important lessons that set a standard
to help us continue the connections:'
says Carol Rosenberg, director, JSL
Foundation.
The U.S. Administration on Aging
enacted Older Americans Month in
1963 to recognize older Americans
as productive, active and influential
people across our country. At that
time, only 17 million Americans had
reached the age of 65. Then, one-
third of older Americans lived in pov-
erty, and there were few programs to
meet their unique needs. It was under
President John F. Kennedy's direction
that the National Council of Senior
Citizens designated May as "Senior
Citizens Month:' In 1980, President
Jimmy Carter changed it to Older
Americans Month.
Those being honored at Eight
Over Eighty, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday,
May 4, at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills are Ada Bandalene,
Joanna Berger, William Farber, Sissi
Lapides, Bernard Moray, Earl Remer,
Sidney Stone and Rolland Walt.
Tickets are $80 for adults, $40 for
children under 18. Contact Michelle
Buda at (248) 592-1101 or email
mbuda@jslmi.org.
About 150 individuals age 95 or
older will be the stars of the Oldest
Jewish Americans Brunch at 11 a.m.
Sunday, May 16, at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The
theme is "The Greatest Generation:
A Sentimental Journey" Tickets are
$25. For details, contact Beth Tryon
at (248) 592-5026 or email btryon@

JSL connects people with services
• In 1967, Israel reunited Jerusalem, offering all Jerusalem Arabs
citizenship and granting religious freedom to all religions.
• Jerusalem's Jewish and Arab populations have surged. To
accommodate this, Israel has built within expanded municipal
boundaries.
