hile many parents were
busy cooking during
Passover and many stu-
dents were relaxing over spring break,
the Ramah Fellows — Hillel Buechler,
Eli Jacober and I — were hard at work
at the community's first Passover Day
Camp held April 17-18 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills.
Employed by National Ramah
Commission in New York and gener-
ously supported by the Davidson
Foundation, the Ramah Fellows
have been working full-time at six
Conservative congregations, Hillel Day
School, Frankel Jewish Academy and
University of Michigan Hillel to engage
Jewish kids and adults in Jewish pro-
gramming year-round.
The two-day camp organized by the
fellows was held during Chol Hamoed
(the intermediate days of Passover)
and was specifically geared toward
the holiday and to offer the flavor of
Camp Ramah, the camping arm of the
Conservative movement.
More than 50 campers from Hillel Day
School in Farmington Hills and other
religious schools in the area in grades
K-4 enjoyed a meaningful Jewish camp-
ing experience by participating in activi-
ties to celebrate their "Freedom:'
Each day was structured similar to a
typical day at Camp Ramah, beginning
with brief Shacharit and Hanel services.

Elliot Salama and Aryeh Gamer work

on their three-tiered matzah plates.

Next

came creating four-tier matzah
plates and Jewish identity boxes made
of sand art with artist Gail Rosenbloom
Kaplan, learning about the importance
of counting the Omer and enjoying a
delicious kosher-for-Passover lunch.
In the afternoons, campers partici-
pated in a relay race where they con-
structed a basket for baby Moses to float
down the creek in back of Adat Shalom.
The campers also were involved in a Ten
Plague Scavenger Hunt, an intense game
of Capture the Afikomen, construction
of matzah houses, Passover trivia, Israeli
dancing, seder plate kick ball and much
more.
With the help of adviser Rebecca Starr,
the education staff and clergy at Adat
Shalom and the outstanding tzevet or
high school volunteers, Passover camp
was a great success.
As the Ramah Fellows finish up their
first of two years in Metro Detroit, they
hope to replicate the Passover camp next
year and include more days. ❑
