ceiefitez mom Steve Stein Contributing Writer C ongratulations to Benny and the Vets. They're the champions of the Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson B'nai B'rith bowling league. They survived a 28-week regular season and three weeks of playoffs to capture the title in the 14-team league, the largest of three B'nai B'rith leagues. Captain Gary Klinger's team also included Ben Shapiro, Dennis Horwitz and Ricky Reznik. Shapiro was new to the team. The top eight teams in the league made the playoffs. Benny and the Vets faced captain Jeff Berlin's team in the finals. Also on Berlin's team were Dave Riger, Ryan Columbus and Steve Lotzoff. It was the third straight year that Berlin's team competed in the finals. That's the good news. The bad news is it has lost in the finals three consecu- tive times. Riger had one of the league's two 300 games. The other perfect game was bowled by Dave Shanbaum. The league bowled at Country Lanes in Farmington Hills. Five - Peat The Downtown Fox cagers Make it five straight B'nai B'rith bas- ketball league championships for Downtown Fox. Player-coach Bruce Nosanchuk's team defeated Pisgah-Zeiger 49-39 in the playoff title game at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield after beating Brotherhood 66-16 in the semifinals. Pisgah-Zeiger knocked off Great Lakes Region 79-57 in the other semifinal. Nosanchuk said his team's philosophy of success is simple. Despite having some turnover on the roster each year, "we all know our strengths and weak- nesses and our roles. "There are no ball hogs and no egos. If someone isn't having a good game, he gives someone else a chance to play. We just want to win and have fun. Nobody walks away thinking he hasn't contrib- uted in some way7 Ben Shapiro, Gary Klinger, Ricky Reznik and Dennis Horwitz There were three new Downtown Fox players this year: Sakari Lasterbey, Eugene North and Edward Szumlanski. They joined veterans Nosanchuk, Matt Chasnick, Kevin Giles, Russ Kacin, Bobby Raitt, Chris Warfield and Kendall Walton. The team ranged in age from the mid-20s to the low-50s. Nosanchuk has been the coach for all five championships. He's played in the league for more than 20 years. Downtown Fox went 7-3 during the regular season and finished on top of the four-team league. League director Gary Klinger is hope- ful of adding a fifth team to the league next year in its 43rd season. He said an over-35 team that plays at the JCC has expressed interest. Fore! The B'nai B'rith golf league is full. Thanks to publicity in this column and legwork by league director Gary Klinger that brought in six golfers over the past few weeks, all 20 spots have been filled. There are 10 two-man teams "but we still need subs:' Klinger said. League play will consist of nine holes on Thursdays for 16 weeks beginning April 24 at the Links of Novi, with the first two weeks used to establish handicaps.
