The earlier any signals or signs of pos- sible problems are detected the more a medical expert can make a significant difference for positive outcomes:' Staci said, "For 30 weeks I had con- tractions — sometimes every three minutes — but I wasn't dilating. I attended our children's second and fourth birthday parties in a wheel- chair although I was told I shouldn't. I wasn't going to miss those events:' Staci's mother Joan Redisch said, "Everything happened so fast there wasn't much time to think about it. My concern was for my daughter. But Jamie and Staci were on a mission, and Staci never complained. I thought they were both so brave:' Staci was given medication to slow the contractions. At the end of May, the contractions started getting stronger. "The doctor told me to lie on my left side and drink lots of water. I did that and kept the twins for another week:' Staci went into labor at 34.5 weeks. Two healthy babies were delivered by C-section, one weighing 5 pounds and the other 4 pounds, 10 ounces. The twins were named Maya, after Staci's grandmother Margaret, and Brooke, after Jamie's grandmother Freda Belle. They were immediately placed in the neonatal intensive-care unit but were able to go home five days later with their mother. "We are so lucky the Beaumont medical staff took a proactive posi- tion during Staci's pregnancy," Jamie said. "My secretary had a friend with TTTS, and only one of their twins survived. We often take so much for granted, but these events put our lives in perspective. Our situation could have been so much worse:' When Staci and the girls came home, it was obvious the Wittenberg fam- ily had outgrown their home. They bought a home in Berkley and for the next seven months, renovated it and added rooms. "It was a hectic time," Staci said. "For a while, I was nursing the twins every two hours to help them gain weight, and then I kept nursing for a full year to give them a better chance to develop normally" Redisch said, "She was like a woman possessed, juggling four children and renovating the house:' Jamie's father had been teaching at the University of Hawaii before com- ing to Michigan to help Jamie with his political campaign. "It didn't take long to decide to remain in Michigan, especially when I found out Staci was pregnant:' he said. "I enjoyed the role of grandfather and got to know the two older girls well when Staci was on bed rest. My two miracle girls, that's what I call them, are so special. Staying with the grandchil- dren and helping Jamie and Staci has been the best stage of my life:' Three months after the twins were born, Staci took Brooke back to Cincinnati where Crombleholme removed one third of her left lung. "I'm very proud about what Jamie and I accomplished:' Staci said. "We wanted our story told to acknowledge those who helped us because the story wouldn't have a happy ending with- out the quick response of Beaumont's medical staff and their collaboration with other hospitals. "We also want others to be aware of this disease and believe it's impor- tant to share stories like these, so that parents don't feel alone with their challenges and can be inspired to do whatever needs to be done:' ❑
