18 Jewish communities aimed at
building and maintaining a Jew-
ish communal presence in Lan-
sing and facilitating the political
and community relations needs
of its members, the commemo-
ration is planned by a commit-
tee of dedicated student leaders
and is attended by community
members, state legislators and
Holocaust survivors.
Before I knew it, I became a
member of the planning com-
mittee and, in April 2013, I had
the incredible honor of shar-
ing my story with those at the
commemoration as the keynote
speaker. This year, I am serv-
ing as the Michigan Jewish
Conference student intern. As
an intern, I have been charged
with organizing the student
committee and planning the
bulk of the commemoration.
Our incredible group of stu-
dent leaders have truly worked
together to make this year's
commemoration one that no
one will forget. The best part
about a student-led committee
planning an event like this is
that the main goal of the cer-
emony will never be lost. For all
of us, our goal is to remind our
peers that the Holocaust needs
to be a topic of conversation.
For our generation, it is our job
to learn the stories of the survi-
vors so they can be carried on
for generations to come.
My determination to the
remembrance of Shoah is
rooted in my grandparents. Even
though my Saba isn't alive any-
more, I believe he knows that
I'm honoring his story. As for
my grandmother, she still lives in
Southfield. She could never truly
understand how much her pres-
ence has shaped my dedication
to Holocaust studies. I consider
myself truly lucky to have my
grandmother, also a survivor,
because through her I have had
the ability to learn so much.
Our generation is an impor-
tant key to preserving the mem-
ory of Holocaust survivors. We
will be the last ones to be able to
speak to them firsthand.
For those who don't have a
survivor in their family, take
this challenge: Ask one survi-
vor to tell you their story and
then pass it on to three others.
Remembrance is life. ❑
