Steititi and ,Beattie EttfutdanticA I Advertisment Serving Up Smiles Left: Waterford office Hersh and Beattie Orthodontics is a family favorite. _....M ore than 10,000 smiles served— and counting. . That's a rough estimate from Dr. Nelson "Nick" Hersh, who makes up one-half of Hersh and Beattie Orthodontics, with offices in West Bloomfield and Waterford. Dr. Marsha Beattie is the other-half of the practice that specializes in orthodontics for peo- ple of all ages — especially children. "I think we both chose to go into orthodontics because we really like kids," says Dr. Hersh, who lives in West Bloomfield and attends Temple Israel. "It feels good to make an impact on their lives. By improving their smiles, they feel better about themselves and that helps them build self-esteem." Dr. Hersh is a published author and speaks locally, especially to children and families, regarding the importance of oral health. He works with local school districts to give stimulating pre- sentations on science, chemistry and oral hygiene. Outside the office, he is a member of the Camp Tamarack and Camp Maas Board of Directors and has served on the West Bloomfield School Board for more than 10 years. He and his wife, Susan, have three daughters, Michelle, Jessica and Rebecca. Susan serves on several Jewish organizations, including JWI Galilee, Hadassah and O RT. Dr. Beattie calls Walled Lake home. "It's nice to practice in the area where I live," she says. "We feel a part of this community. Most of our patients rec- ognize that we care about education and kids no matter where they live. We support many local school districts, including Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, Farmington, Waterford and Huron Valley, to name a few." Both Drs. Hersh and Beattie have undertaken specialist training beyond dental school and continue to keep up- to-date on the latest advances in com- prehensive orthodontia, including early interceptive treatment, growth modi- fication and guidance, as well as space maintenance. They offer a wide range of braces to meet the needs of each individual patient, including clear and Invisalign clear, plastic aligners, which straighten teeth without noticeable, bulky materials. Dr. Hersh is a certified Invisalign provider. In addition, they offer custom-made Lingual braces, which are placed behind the upper and/or lower teeth, mak- ing them virtually undetectable and allowing children to retain their normal appearance for the duration of their treatment. Their office is equipped with an in- house lab and state-of-the-art technol- ogy, such as digital imaging, to ensure Below: West Bloomfield office patients receive optimum results. WHEN TO SEE THE ORTHODONTIST A child's first visit to the ortho- dontist should come earlier than you may think. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive an initial screening around age 7. "It's better to prevent prob- lems then solve them," Dr. Hersh says. "Baby teeth can be in the way, causing permanent teeth to erupt in the wrong way. It's bet- ter to be safe than sorry." Orthodontists understand how your teeth, your jaws and your facial muscles all work together to give you a healthy bite, which includes up to 32 teeth, upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles. Your healthy bite is the orthodontist's goal. "Orthodontics doesn't pro- vide only cosmetic benefits," Dr. Beattie says. "It provides dental goals, and we'll have mul- tiple consultations to be sure that happens." Hersh recently added another orthodontist to the staff in order to expand his afterschool hours. "I don't like kids missing school, even for a visit here." Dr. Beattie, Dr. Hersh and Dr. Isenberg health benefits as well — a smile and a bite that functions properly." At Hersh Beattie Orthodontics, initial consultations are free. And no refer- rals are needed. "We evaluate what needs to be done and what can be done to make the child's smile nicer," says Dr. Hersh, who prefers to see patients between the ages of 7 and 10. "It's not necessary — or advised — to wait until the baby teeth fall out. We specialize in preventing problems as the permanent teeth come in." Both doctors work to ensure that the kids are comfortable in the office and they feel comfortable asking ques- tions. "My motto is to treat every child as I would my own son or daughter. Everyone on my staff feels the same way," Dr. Hersh says. Dr. Beattie adds. "When we see patients and recommend treatment, we want to educate them as well as their parents to ensure they understand our CONNECTIONS TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY Many of the patients Drs. Hersh and Beattie see are members of the Jewish community — and those children are anxious to have a healthy and pretty smile for their bar and bat mitzvahs. "Nobody wants to be wearing braces on their big day!" Hersh says. Hersh is active within the Jewish community, at Tamarack and the JCC, and he recently booked a private tour of the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills for his entire staff. "It was an incredibly moving day," says Hersh, who has family that perished during the Holocaust. "Everyone on my staff wants to go back." Drs. Hersh and Beattie also know the importance of giving back. "I want to serve as an example to my children," Dr. Hersh says. "Serving others is what it means to be a good Jew." He and Dr. Beattie share a passion for education and volunteer both time and finances to improve local educa- tion. Their office supports many sports leagues, school teams of varying types, extra-curricular activities, in-school sci- ence presentations, gymnastic facilities and dance studios, and have sponsored fund-raising events at schools through- out Oakland County. "What's important to me and my fam- ily is health, education and the Jewish community," Hersh says. "We're more than just an orthodontics office; we're a family. I'm starting to see second-gen- eration patients coming in. I recognize their parents from when they came in for braces!" The best part of being an orthodon- tist, Dr. Hersh says, is seeing former patients and their beautiful smiles. "There is no greater gratification than knowing that I've made a difference in someone's life." ❑ Hersh and Beattie Orthodontics West Bloomfield Office 2300 Haggerty Road, Suite 1160 West Bloomfield, MI, 48323 Phone: (248) 926-4100 Waterford Office 5133 Highland Road Waterford, Ml 48327 Phone: (248) 673-4100 E-mail: hershbeattieortho@yahoo.com
