COUNTRY CLUB

Nothing defines the best of Michigan's summer like sun bathing,
a nice dip, great food, and wonderful people all in a single
relaxing environment at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club

stigmas and focus the core of
our energy on similarities over
differences, on embracing Detroit
for the unique and complex place
that it is.

Seeing The Positive
In a chance conversation one day,
I spoke with a deeply Catholic
man and an Orthodox Jew; I (the
Reform Jew) sought common
ground. The three of us agreed
on the fundamental principle
that each of us is b'tzelem Elohim,
made in God's image. If we are to
truly serve Detroit, this principle
must remain at the forefront of the
discussion: to see the positive and
similarities in people, rather than
the differences.
It is that Jewish maxim, oft-cited
but rarely fully realized, al shlosha
d'varim ("The world is sustained
by three things: by truth, by justice
and by peace") that illuminates the
power of Detroit: what volunteers
can give, but more importantly,
what we can receive.
On the last day of the trip, Falik
paid a visit to the Summer in the
City house, took a seat at the end of
the dining room table and gestured
toward images of Detroit and inspi-
rational quotes on the wall behind
him.
"What you have done this week
mattered to these students:' he said.
"The experiences were formative, if
not transformative, for them?'
What Falik may not have realized
is that the week was formative, if
not transformative, for us, too. E
