Ask the Orthodontist "Over-bites." The term over-bite refers to the amount of vertical overlap of the front teeth. Too much, or insufficient over-bite can cause problems. The mal-occlusion known as over-bite deserves attention because it can potentially interfere with speaking, swallowing, chewing foods and often considered a cosmetic concern as well. Ask the Orthodontist Greenberg-Pearlman D ebbie and Dan Greenberg of Homewood, Ill., and Barbara and Harvey Pearlman of Commerce Township are delighted to announce the engagement of their children Stephanie Elise Greenberg and Adam Ryan Pearlman. Stephanie received her bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado and her juris doctor from the John Marshall Law School. She is a partner in the family law firm of Greenberg and Sinkovits. Adam graduated from the Broad College of Business at Michigan State University and is pursuing a master's degree in information systems at DePaul University. He is employed by the Hackett Group as a consultant. Stephanie and Adam live in Chicago. An August wedding is planned in Chicago. Excessive over-bite, or a deep bite, is too much overlap of the front teeth. A parent noticing that the lower front teeth are not visualized very much when the teeth are closed together can detect this. This situation means excessive force from biting, is conveyed to the front teeth (which are smaller than the back teeth and not designed to take that force). This can lead to excessive wear, fracturing and chipping of teeth, and may even predispose the individual to future TMD, which are jaw joint difficulties. Sometimes the over-bite may be so deep that the lower front teeth actually reach the roof of the mouth which can lead toward other problems. This is referred to as a deep impinging over-bite. Dr. Nelson Hersh Dr. Marsha Beanie Dr. Amy Isenberg Insufficient over-bite is referred to as an anterior (or front) open-bite. This not only creates a cosmetic issue but also without the front teeth able to bite together properly, may lead to excessive force on the posterior or back teeth. This can lead to excessive wear and future restorative dental needs such as crowns etc. Licensed Specialists for Children & Adults Parents with any orthodontic concerns for their child should consult an orthodontist to discuss alternatives and the benefits of orthodontic treatment. As a dental specialist, an orthodontist has elected to limit his or her practice to this specific area of expertise and has received additional training by an accredited dental school for advanced education.
