HAPPY HOUR SPECIAL 5% off Total Bill! Monday-Thursday 3pm-5:30pm made by the symphony involve a part- nership with radio station WRCJ-FM (90.9 on the dial), which broadcasts about 10 concerts a year and streams them through the station's website. There are recording projects to pro- duce CDs as well as digital downloads, available through Amazon and iTunes. TV projects are taken on when pos- sible. "We try to use all the mediums so people can connect with us in different ways, but the Internet is certainly the largest one because it offers the largest reach:' Harrison says. "We regularly communicate through Facebook and Twitter." Harrison explains that the com- mitment to digital opportunities hap- pened about three years ago. "The DSO wanted to become the most accessible orchestra on the planet:' he says. "We wanted to use all the mediums at our disposal to make great music available to everyone. It is a way of sharing our art with existing audiences and reaching new audiences globally." Music first reached Harrison most deeply through an interest in instru- mental performance. "I fell in love with music while attending high school and became a bassoonist:' says Harrison, who grew up on Long Island and was active with Temple Judea in Manhasset, N.Y. "I wanted to pursue music in college but also had other interests. "I went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and did a double major in bassoon studies and politi- cal science. I got a master's in bassoon performance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where there actu- ally is a large Jewish population. As I had work-study roles and did an internship with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, I got to learn about the behind-the-scenes workings of the orchestral world, and it reso- nated with me. I knew I could be most fulfilled administratively:' After spending a summer at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony Orchestra administra- tion, Harrison worked on educational and community programs with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Responsibilities for marketing and digital media with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra preceded his move to Detroit. Harrison has not given up on the bassoon. "I travel to Haiti once or twice a year and work with a music program there reveals Harrison, who has played bas- soon with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport (La.) Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Wind Symphony. "It's social development through music. I perform, teach and work with students. "I'm also involved with BLUME Haiti, a nonprofit. We do fundraising to further support music education and development work with a focus on building the infrastructure and capac- ity of schools." Harrison became moved by the problems faced in Haiti after visit- ing a friend, Jonathan Katz, a former Associated Press reporter who covered the 2010 earthquake and wrote The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster. Travel to Haiti resulted in meetings with educators and projects. Harrison's work in Detroit led to a different kind of meeting that is changing his life. Angela Detlor, for- merly on the symphony staff and now a fundraising consultant, became his fiancee, and they are planning a sum- mer wedding. "We live in Midtown, and I've fallen in love with this area: Harrison says. "I try to bike around the city, and we eat in restaurants every place that we can. "I belong to the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. I love its mis- sion and host a seder every year. Most of the people who come are not Jewish, but they enjoy experiencing who we are. "My fiancee is not Jewish so we're going to do a combination of things for the wedding. The ceremony will be on Belle Isle and the reception at the Detroit Mercantile Co. [near Eastern Market], catered by Zingerman's:' Harrison, having fun on an ice hockey team with an adult league in Royal Oak, is moving along with plans for the DSO future. "I know there will be a day when every concert is webcast," he says. "We're working our way up to it. We've talked about how we want this venue known as a venue digitally available for everything produced here." ❑ Upcoming DSO webcasts include Leon Fleisher & Shostakovich 10 (3 p.m. Sunday, April 6); Special Event: Yo-Yo Ma with the DSO (7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9); Beethoven Violin Concerto (10:45 a.m. Friday, April 25); Lortie Plays Chopin (10:45 a.m. Friday, May 2); Bronfman Plays Beethoven (3 p.m. Sunday, May 18); Elgar Cello Concerto (7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22); and Season Finale: Mahler's Third Symphony (8 p.m. Friday, May 30).
