endy and Gabe Hertz's
daughter Renee was about
10 years old when she was
diagnosed with celiac disease and eosino-
philic esophagitis. The revelation thrust
the Hertz family of Southfield, which also
includes older brother Donovan, onto
a long, frustrating journey through the
world of eating gluten-free.
What Renee, now 14, and her family
quickly discovered was that there were a
whole lot of gluten-free
products on the market.
Unfortunately, they didn't
taste very good.
Even more frustrating,
however, was how the
limitations of Renee's food
allergies were impacting
the family's opportunities
to dine out together at a
restaurant. While some
establishments offer
gluten-free items on their
menus, for someone living
with severe food allergies, the risk of cross-
contamination can be just too great.
That's where the idea for Renee's
Gourmet Pizzeria was born — a
100 percent gluten-free and nut-free
restaurant, which Gabe opened in
February with partners Gil Stebbins and
Chef Tim Karapici.
Renee's Gourmet Pizzeria, located in
Troy at 1937 W. Maple Road, serves soups,
salads, calzones, chicken wings and other
appetizers, as well as desserts like fresh
cinnamon sticks, in addition to its more
than a dozen unique specialty pizzas.
Every item on the menu is guaranteed
100 percent gluten- and nut-free, and
customers may request an allergen list for
any dish at any time. The restaurant, open
seven days-a-week, offers dine-in, carryout
and delivery
"Anyone who has, or loves someone
who has, severe food allergies knows that
dining out can be a challenge at best and
dangerous at worst" said Hertz. "We set
out to create a place where people like my
daughter, and families like ours, could
dine-out and enjoy each other's company
and some good food with total peace of
mind"
Although a first-time restaurateur,
Hertz, a 1988 graduate of Akiva
Hebrew Day School, has long been an
entrepreneur, owning
and operating a variety of
businesses around southeast
Michigan throughout his
career, including most
recently the Relax the Back
store in Bloomfield Hills.
However, the food industry
runs in his blood, as Gabe's
late mother, Maria Hertz,
co-owned and operated
Unique Kosher Carryout &
Catering in Oak Park for 13
years.
"I know my mom would
be proud of the food that we're creating at
Renee's!" said Hertz.
It seems that Renee certainly is. "It is
pretty cool to have a restaurant named in
my honor, I have to admit" said Renee,
who is a high school freshman. "But more
importantly, I am so thankful to my dad
and Tim for creating this amazing place
where people with food limitations like
me can eat anything and everything on
the menu. It's a totally new and awesome
experience for me!"
