ew season, new golf course.

The weekly B'nai B'rith Great
Lakes Region golf league made
it through its inaugural season in 2013,
and now it's ready for its second year.
The setup is the same — two-man
teams playing nine holes each week —
but there's a new home course, the Links
of Novi at 50395 W 10 Mile Road.
Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in
Plymouth was the home course last year.
"We play at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, so
we needed to find a course that's closer
to where the guys live and work:' said
Gary Klinger, Great Lakes Region's
sports chairman and league organizer.
This season will run for 16 weeks,
and there won't be competition April 24
and May 1, the first two weeks. They'll
be used to establish handicaps.
There's room for 20 golfers. Klinger
said he has 15 commitments. Of the 15,
10 are returning golfers.
Twelve golfers competed last season.
If a team member is absent for league
play, subs will be available or the miss-
ing golfer's handicap score will be used.
Cost is $208 for each eight-week half
of the season. It includes greens fees and
use of a golf cart each week, awards and
a post-season banquet.
"After the winter we've had, everyone
is so looking forward to playing golf:'
Klinger said.
"I think this is a good league. It's com-
petitive, and there's a mix of talent:'

It's Madness

Two Jewish college basketball coaches
have made news during March
Madness.
Bruce Pearl, who coached the U.S.
men's team to the gold medal at the
2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel, was
hired to coach the Auburn University
men's team.
Pearl had been working as a men's
college basketball commentator at ESPN
since he was fired by the University of
Tennessee in 2012.
He was one of the founders and the
first president of the Jewish Coaches
Association, which supports college,
high school and youth basketball coach-
es in the U.S.
Led by coach Jodi Kest, the University
of Akron women's basketball team won
its first Mid-American Conference cham-
pionship in the program's 40-year history.
The Zips beat Ball State 79-68 on
March 15 in the MAC tournament title
game and earned their first berth in the
NCAA tourney.
Akron (23-7) entered the NCAA tour-
ney with 16 wins in 17 games.
The Zips suffered through seven
consecutive losing seasons — includ-
ing 1-27 in 2001-2002 — before Kest
became coach in 2006.
