An Unselfish Survivor

ih jp

ulius Roth, 85, of West
Bloomfield, died March 18,
2014.
Born Nov. 4, 1928, in Tluste, Poland,
Julius was a unique man for many rea-
sons. During World War II, he was in hid-
ing for 19 months with his mother, sister,
aunt and a cousin in an attic at a farm in
Poland. Because of cramped living condi-
tions, he was separated from his father
and brother, who hid at another farm but
who were found and then murdered.
After the war, he made his way to
France and then became part of the
Zionist movement. He came to the United
States in 1948 through Canada because of
the quotas. On a visit to Israel, he met his
wife, Odette.

During the war, out of the necessity of
survival, Julius became a great negotiator
and a storyteller; in the United States, he
used these skills and started buying and
selling produce.
Eventually, he
opened his first
market, Odette's
Market, and then
a multiple of
stores including
Jay's Farm Market.
He also went into
the liquidation
business and,
Julius Roth
starting small,
built up the busi-
ness, which became General Liquidators.

Always for the family, never for himself,
he did not have a selfish bone in his body.
He loved his children almost to a fault.
They were his life.
Mr. Roth is sur-
vived by his beloved
and devoted lifelong
partner, Odette Roth;
he was a warm and
loving father and hero
to his daughters and
usT sons-in-law, Helene
14FOR and Greg Glassman
of Port Washington,
N.Y., Sandy and
Marc Taub of New York, N.Y.; son and
daughter-in-law, Steven and Amy Roth
of Port Washington; a cherished and car-

ing brother and brother-in-law of Etka
Goldenberg and Lilliane Roth; proud
grandfather of Amanda Glassman, Ally
Glassman, Jake Taub, Chloe Taub, Joshua
Roth and Zachary Roth. He is also sur-
vived by many loving nieces, nephews.
He had an unbroken bond with his cousin
Paulette Klin.

brother-in-law of the late Joseph Roth, the
late Herman Goldenberg.
