The cast of We Will Rock You
theatrical Queen
We Will Rock You takes the stage at
Detroit's Fisher Theatre.
Suzanne Chessler
I Contributing Writer
N
ate Patten — like his late
cousin, Jewish theater veter-
an and Tony nominee Bruce
Adler — keeps up a family tradition
but takes it in a new direction: rock.
Patten is touring as music direc-
tor of We Will Rock You, a play built
around 24 songs made famous by the
British rock band Queen. The show
runs April 1-13 at the Fisher Theatre.
"This play is the closest thing to a
Queen concert but still a completely
original theater piece says Patten, 30,
in a phone conversation from the road.
"This is unlike anything I have ever
done before. I've mostly done theatrical
productions but never one as much of a
rock show. The entire band is on stage:'
The play, which features hits such
as "Another One Bites the Dust" and
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love takes
place in a future age on a planet, once
called Earth, which is now controlled
by a mighty corporation. Globalization
is complete, and individuality is taboo.
The hope of breaking free rests with
an alliance of rebel bohemians waiting
for a hero to lead the battle that would
bring power back to the people.
The show, created by British come-
dian and writer Ben Elton, who has
German Jewish heritage on his father's
side, has been updated and rewritten
for American audiences.
"I was familiar with many of the
big hits before I joined the show but
learned a number of songs that are a
little more obscure Patten explains.
"I found them just as good as the ones
everybody knows:'
Patten, who grew up in New Jersey
and is now based in New York, also
knows Michigan. He did a bus-and-
truck tour around the state in 2009,
working with a production of The
Wizard of Oz.
With a background of piano lessons
that began as he started school, Patten
played rehearsal piano in theater pro-
grams at the University of Virginia,
where he majored in Spanish and
minored in theater.
"I spent the majority of my time
doing theater even though my major
was something else he explains. "I
wanted to learn theater without having
it as my main focus of study.
"I think music directing is one of
those things really learned by doing
and working with other people who
know how to do it. Once I got in the
professional world, I really started
meeting and working with experienced
music directors. I learned from them
and figured out how to do it by paying
attention to the way they worked:'
Patten, who played piano in the
Broadway orchestra of Catch Me
If You Can, has conducted Silence
the Musical, The Toxic Avenger and
Flashdance.
"In addition to having iconic songs,
We Will Rock You is laugh-out-loud
funny with a message and a lot of
heart behind it," says Patten, working
with an eight-piece band that includes
three keyboards, two guitars, bass,
drums and percussions.
"I think it's great that there will
be an actual concert tour, "Queen +
Adam Lambert:' coming to Michigan
this summer. (Adam Lambert, who is
Jewish, will be lead vocalist, standing
in for the late Freddie Mercury, for the
July 12 concert at the Palace of Auburn
Hills. For tickets, go to the website
www.livenation.com.)
"Anything that gets this music out
to people is great. If that show brings
iconic songs to a new, younger audi-
ence, I'm all about it:'
