A visit to a senior residence in West Bloomfield gave third- graders at Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills an opportunity to perform a double mitzvah — that of giving mishloach manot on Purim and misameach, engaging in activities that bring joy and lift the spirits of others. They accomplished these deeds in full Purim regalia at American House in West Bloomfield in front of an audience of about 25 residents. Students sang, distributed handmade Purim treats they had baked and assembled at school, and visited with seniors. Students reflected on their experi- ences in writing. Although many had . ...,,,.. p been nervous to interact with seniors, they returned "happy and proud" to have performed these mitzvot. Student Adin Victor, who wrote that she had "never been to an elderly home before was at first scared. But afterward, she wrote, "I felt relieved because I knew I had nothing to worry about. I had such a great expe- rience and hope to visit again soon!" Teacher Malka Littman, whose mother was among the residents in attendance, and the entire third-grade Judaic studies teaching team, hope the visit will become an annual tradi- tion. "Through experiential learning such as this, our students are really living the mitzvot," Littman said. ❑ Lois & Avern Cohn ffr',1 Sunday, June 22 7:00 p.m. Hillel Day School third-graders, dressed in Purim costumes, came to a senior residence to celebrate Purim.
