Cohn-Haddow
Forum To Examine
Jews Of Detroit

T

he Cohn-Haddow Center for
Judaic Studies at Wayne State
University will sponsor a one-
day symposium, "The Jews of Detroit:
Past, Present, Future from 9 a.m.-4
p.m. Sunday, April 6. The symposium
will reflect on the impact of the exodus
of Jews and others from Detroit, and
bring together representatives from
various groups instrumental in the
recent revival of the city and its Jewish
community.
The symposium epitomizes the
Cohn-Haddow Center's mission. In
addition to sponsoring intellectually
substantive programs on Jewish history
and culture, the center also provides
a forum for an intensive exchange of
ideas among organizations and con-
stituencies connected to Metro Detroit
and its Jewish community.
The first part of the program will
feature lectures on the recent history
of Detroit and its Jewish community
by two young scholars. Professor Lila
Corwin Berman, whose new history of
the Jews of Detroit will appear later this
year, will discuss the ways Jews who
left Detroit during the 1940s and 1950s
maintained strong ties to the city that
were reflected in the design and func-
tion of newly constructed suburban
synagogues and temples. Dr. Walter
Greason will compare the economic
and social impact of suburbiniza-
tion of Detroit on Jews and African
Americans.
The second half of the program will
consist of two panel discussions, the
first discussing the recent resurgence
of the city and its Jewish community,
and the other exploring visions of
the future. Participants represent a
diverse tapestry of engagement in the
city, including entrepreneurs, urban
planners, active members of the Isaac
Agree Downtown Synagogue, members
of the Detroit and Southfield city coun-
cils, and a representative from the agri-
cultural project Keep Growing Detroit.
All sessions will take place in the
McGregor Conference Center B-C on
the WSU campus. All are free and open
to the public. There is no advanced
registration. Free transportation is
available from the West Bloomfield
and Oak Park branches of the Jewish
Community Center (reservations are
due by April 2). A dairy kosher lunch
will be provided for those who sign up
by April 2.
The event is co-sponsored by the
Jewish Historical Society of Michigan,
the IN and WDET. Contact the center
at (313) 577-2679, cohnhaddowcenter@
