n March 18, hundreds of
University of Michigan stu-
dents attended the Central
Student Government (CSG) meeting
to support a proposed resolution call-
ing for U-M to divest its interests in
United Technologies, General Electric,
Heidelberg Cement and Caterpillar
Inc., according to the Michigan Daily.
Students Allied for Freedom and
Equality (SAFE), the lead group support-
ing the resolution, alleges these compa-
nies hold contracts with Israel's military
and thereby support human rights viola-
tions against Palestinians, the story said.
The Student Assembly, CSG's legislative
branch, voted 21-15, with one abstention,
to indefinitely table the resolution. Upset
with the decision, SAFE members and
other supporters occupied CSG's cham-
bers until their demands to re-address
the resolution were met.
The sit-in began as student govern-
ments at San Diego State University and
Loyola University Chicago passed similar
divestment resolutions last week.
In a post March 23 on the CSG website,
student president Michael Proppe per-
sonally apologized to any U-M students
who felt silenced or unheard at the March
18 CSG meeting. He also said a motion
to reconsider the resolution vote would
be made at its next meeting on Tuesday,
March 25, (after the JN's press time).
Proppe also told the Daily that some
CGS members, especially those who
voted to table the resolution, received
threats and were afraid to attend classes.
Last week's Daily story said that junior
Michele Freed, University of Michigan
Hillel chair, spoke against the resolution,
which she said would heighten pre-exist-
ing tensions on campus.
"I want multiple and diverse narratives
to come together in peaceful and safe
spaces on campus, where all voices have
a space and are respected:' Freed told
the Daily. "This polarizing resolution is
bringing about just the opposite:'
On March 21, Hillel hosted Dean of
Students Laura Blake Jones to hear stu-
dent concerns about the divestment reso-
lution and the tension on campus.
"The tension around this resolution
has brought division and polarization to
campus:' said Tilly Shames, Hillel execu-
tive director. "We hope to move forward
after the vote on Tuesday night to work
both within our Jewish community and
with partners on campus on respectful
dialogue and meaningful unifying work:
Students preparing speeches for the
Tuesday night vote hope to show the
diverse ways students support Israel and
expose the polarization the divestment
resolution has brought to campus, Shames
said.
