Akiva Gives Aid To Family
Who Suffered House Fire
On Jan. 10, we had an electrical fire
that caused extensive damage to our
Huntington Woods home. Our old-
est daughter, Shoshana, attends Akiva
Hebrew Day School. When the Akiva
families and teachers learned about
our situation, they quickly organized
several weeks of meals for our family.
The meals provided us with a sense of
comfort and support.
This experience reinforced to us the
essence of what Judaism and what a
caring Jewish community is all about.
We want to thank and praise the
Akiva community for all of the help
they provided for us during this dif-
ficult time.

NCJW Created Program
Linking Generations
Your recent article about the Dor
L'Dor program at Hillel Day School,
connecting students with Fleischman
& Hechtman Apartment residents
("Bridging Generations:' March 13,
page 20), praised the 35 year-old proj-
ect.
However, it neglected to mention that
National Council of Jewish Women,
Greater Detroit Section originated this
wonderful program. NCJW/Greater
Detroit has been the original provider
of many community service projects
both locally, nationally and in Israel.
We are happy to see the expansion of
this enriching program.
I was also delighted to see the letter
from Etta Bernard praising National
Council of Jewish Women, Greater
Detroit Section's Meals on Wheels pro-
gram (March 13, page 5).
We are very proud of this community

BDS Goal Is Not 'Peace'
But Destruction Of Israel
Last Tuesday the University of Michigan
student government tabled a BDS-driven
divestment vote (BDS refers to "boy-
cott, divestment, sanctions"). Before
that, the Ann Arbor and Dearborn
campuses hosted lectures by Electronic
Intifada founder Ali Abunimah. He
was sponsored by the Muslim Student
Association, Friends of Sabeel, Jewish
Voice for Peace, and Students Allied with
Freedom and Equality (SAFE).
Abunimah's lectures demonized
Israel, without a historical context or
worry about truth. According to him,
Israel is starving the Gazans by not
allowing enough trucks in, the tunnels
to Egypt are smuggling needed food
and the Egyptians are now destroying
those tunnels. (No mention of rockets
and weapons.) According to Abunimah,
Israel is killing Gazan chickens so
there will be no eggs, and Israelis shoot
Gazan farmers tilling their fields.
Abunimah says that on campus every-
thing is stacked against the Palestinian
students, that Title VI civil rights pro-
tection for Jews is unfairly used to shut
down Apartheid Week, that the David
Project promotes the idea that Arab
students are bigots and that anti-Semitic
vandalism is actually done by pro-Israel
students so that the Arab students will
be blamed. Still, Abunimah says, pro-
Israel groups have already lost the debate
that Palestinians are winning.
According to Abunimah, the United
States is the most racist country in the
world. This gives you a feel for the tone

people in Israel and around the world.

His areas of expertise are biblical nar-
ratives, Jewish family education, and
tzedakah and social justice. His best-
selling publications include A Different

Night: The Family Participation
Haggadah.
Following dinner on Friday evening,
Zion will discuss his unique Guide to
the Perplexed Seder Leader. He will
conduct a Saturday morning Torah
study session on "Art, Politics and the
Psychology of the Four Daughters and
Four Sons" and will deliver the ser-
mon on "How to Liberate Your Seder."
On Sunday morning, he will present
an adult workshop, "101 Ideas for a
Participatory Pesach."

of his presentation.
Abunimah's allies are asking Latinos
and other minorities to join their cause,
making a racism argument. This is the
consistent strategy of the BDS move-
ment. Few in the community are aware
of what is going on. The BDS goal is the
destruction of the State of Israel, not
promoting a "peace process:'

Tick

..

.

Yes, you guessed it '"rock."

That was easy. Let's try
another one. If you have
$30,000 of Credit Card debt
at 20% interest, how much interest
will you pay per year on the debt? The
Answer is $6,000. If you are in a 30%
tax bracket, do you know how much
you need to make to pay your taxes
and net $6,000 to pay the taxes? The
Answer is $8,571. If you are making
$85,710 per year, do you know much
of your income you are wasting on
the interest? The Answer is 10%. Next
Question - If you have credit card
debt like this, do you know what you
should do? The Answer is YOU NEED
TO TAKE ACTION to get rid of the
debt, so the $8,571 goes to pre-tax
retirement savings instead. If you earn
7% on your money in an IRA or 401(k),
do you know how much the $8,571
will be in 15 years? The Answer is
$226,405. If you would rather have the
$226,405 then pay the credit card debt,
do you know what to do? The Answer
- Call Thav Gross - we do many things
- but there is nothing better than what
we do with credit card debt!
