he Ira Kaufman Chapel is
a legendary Detroit Jewish
institution. Founded by Ira
Kaufman in 1941 — the original
location was at Dexter and Edison in
Detroit — the chapel has served the
community for more than 70 years. It
has a proud tradition of independent
family-driven service through the
involvement of three subsequent gen-
erations of the Kaufman family, includ-
ing Ira's son, Herb, his grandson-in-law,
David Techner, and his great-grandson,
Chad Techner.
The family-owned business is a
source of respect for Jewish traditions,
compassion for grieving families and a
commitment to quality service.
With the 72nd anniversary of the
Jewish News approaching on March
27, it is interesting to note that the
first advertisement for the chapel in
the JN appeared in its very first issue.
The advertisement promised that the
chapel's service was "one of beauty
expressed in simplicity and conforming
to our Jewish customs and practices"
