Personal Best

Cancer survivor, 55, wins gold medal
for 320-pound bench press.

N

eed a lift?
Check out what West
Bloomfield resident and can-
cer survivor Jeff Ellis did last month at
the Michigan Senior Olympics weight-
lifting competition at the Rochester
Athletic Club.
He won his seventh Senior Olympics
gold medal in weightlifting with a
record-breaking bench press of 320
pounds in the 55-59 age group.
"That's a middle-age personal best
for me, and a weight I haven't bench-
pressed in more than 20 years:' said
the former Michigan State University
weightlifting standout.
His previous middle-age bench-
press best was 315 pounds. He did that
last summer in the Senior Olympics.
When Ellis won his first Senior
Olympics gold in summer 2009, a few
months before his colon cancer diag-
nosis, his bench press was 275 pounds.
Last month's competition was the
first time Ellis, who will turn 55 in May,
participated in the 55-59 age group.
He has no intentions of slowing
down. The certified public accountant
rarely misses a lifting or cardiovascu-
lar workout, which keeps his weight in
the 192- to 196-pound range.
His goal is to bench press 325
pounds this summer in the Michigan
Senior Olympics competition.
"I really enjoy competing in the
Senior Olympics," said Ellis, who has
been cancer-free for four years.
"People are great. They're very
encouraging. Everyone roots for each
other"
