Cabaret 313, a new
nonprofit cultural
organization co-
founded by Sandy
Reitelman and
Allan Nachman
dedicated to bring-
ing the art form of
cabaret to intimate settings around
Detroit, presents the Detroit debut
of Norm Lewis, the Tony-nominated
performer who originated the role of
Porgy, opposite Audra McDonald's
Bess, in the re-imagined Broadway
revival of The Gershwin's Porgy & Bess
(see related story on page 56), in an
evening of story and song at 7 and 10
p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Marlene
Boll Theatre at the Downtown YMCA
in Detroit. TV fans will recognize
Lewis as Sen. Edison Davis, a former
love interest of Kerry Washington's
Olivia Pope, on the hit ABC series
Scandal. A reception beginning one
hour prior to each show includes com-
plimentary hors d'oeuvres, wine and
beer. $50 general auditorium-style seat-
ing/$125 cabaret-style preferred seat-

DANCE FEVER

The Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet
returns to the Detroit Opera House to
present American Legends, a program
showcasing works by master choreog-
raphers Jerome Robbins (Interplay,
with music by Morton Gould),
Twyla Tharp (Nine Sinatra Songs)
and Stanton Welch (Son of Chamber
Symphony, with music by John Adams)
at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, and
2 p.m. Sunday, March 2. Free dance
talk one hour before performances.
A master class for intermediate and
advanced-level ballet dancers will be
taught by members of the Joffrey at 11
a.m. on March 1; free with a ticket to
a performance or $25 without (to reg-

Are you an American Idol fan? It's
time to start power-voting for Sam
Woolf, 17, formerly of West Bloomfield
and now of Bradenton, Fla., where the
high school senior currently lives with
his grandparents, Dr. Elroy and Jackie
Woolf. The younger Woolf, a namesake
great-grandson of the late legendary
Detroit bandleader Sammy Woolf, has
serious musical chops. He's been widely
praised for his pitch-perfect voice by
the Idol judges, plays guitar, writes his

own songs and has been
accepted to the presti-
gious Berklee College of
Music in Boston for the
fall. On Wednesday, Feb.
26, the Top 13 performed;
find out on tonight's
results show, at 8 p.m.
on Fox, if Woolf earned
enough votes to go on to
next week's performance show, which
will air 8-10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.
