obituaries Obituaries from page 65 ERMA SHIRLEY ZELDES, 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., on Jan. 25, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born on April Zeldes 14, 1928, in Detroit to Anne (Rabinowitz) and Charles Averbuch. She grew up in Detroit and graduated from Cass Technical High School. In 1949, friends took her to a dance, where she met a handsome, newly discharged navigator, Sherman Zeldes. They married in 1950 and later moved to Southfield, where they raised three children. In 1992, she and Sherman moved to San Diego, where she adopted Tuffy2, a Shih- Tzu, whom she adored for 18 years. Mrs. Zeldes was an expert knitter and did beautiful needlepoint work. She also enjoyed playing tennis and golf as well as mah Jong and canasta, and in her later years became an avid bridge player. The highpoints in Erma's life were all centered on her family: her son becoming a doctor (every Jewish mother's dream), the marriages of her children and the joy of her grandchildren. She was much loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Zeldes was preceded in death by her dear husband after 52 years of mar- riage.
